He used to fix pipes. Now he reads the Russian army’s mind. Meet the Ukrainian plumber who became an intelligence analyst. Callsign “Lys” — “Fox” — is a plumber and gas welder by trade. Today he sits in a small room near Ukraine’s front line and listens to Russian radio traffic. He hears Russian assault troops asking their commanders for water and being told to crawl forward instead. He hears wounded Russian soldiers being abandoned by their own. He predicts Russian assaults before they begin — by listening to the silence between the words. Лучше всего подходит слово resilience. Видна усталость от войны, но вместе с ней — несломленность, выдержка, злость и готовность идти до конца. Скорого окончания войны никто не ждет: собеседники говорят, что это надолго, возможно, еще на годы. Но также говорят, что будут стоять до конца, потому что есть за что стоять, а единственная альтернатива — быть уничтоженными Россией. 2. Оба города живые и активные, с множеством ресторанов, кафе и баров. Если вынести за скобки периодические воздушные тревоги (мы оказались в Киеве накануне одного из самых массированных российских обстрелов с начала войны) на которые местные почти не реагируют, а также мужчин в форме, в центре почти нет ощущения войны. Во Львове, где я не раз бывала до 2022 года, визуально стало заметно больше людей и машин. Вероятно, это связано с внутренней миграцией из восточных регионов Украины. 3. С каждым приездом в Украину все сильнее заметно единение нации. В Киеве русский язык почти полностью исчез с этикеток, меню и вывесок: все на украинском (во Львове так было и до 2022 года). По ощущениям, русский исчезает и из повседневного общения. Через общее настроение, вывески, слоганы и шутки возникает чувство, что оставшиеся в стране люди не посторонние друг другу: они объединены общей сопричастностью к делу перемоги. 4. Украина на глазах становится флагманом военного хай-тека: множество новых стартапов, развитие ВПК, растущее лидерство в этой сфере на мировой сцене, включая активную роль Зеленского в продвижении украинских технологий для стран Залива и других партнеров. 5. Заметный рост оптимизма связан с изменением ситуации на фронте (текущее дроновое преимущество Украины и успехи в контрнаступлении), хотя пока не ясно, насколько оно устойчиво. Но этот оптимизм, вероятно, связан и с тем, что украинцы только что пережили тяжелейшую зиму из-за российских атак по энергетической инфраструктуре, поэтому смена настроений отражает и приход весны. 6. В целом, Украина проделала огромный путь, став самостийной, сильной страной, которая выстоит и переможет. Нет никаких сомнений, что она не сдастся Путину. From fall 2025 through spring 2026, the words “aerostat notice” have appeared hundreds of times on Russian Telegram channels that monitor Ukrainian air threats. Over 1,000 Ukrainian balloons have drifted east into Russia since fall 2025. A skilled team can deploy one in 15 minutes. At least one went 4,000 km deep into Russian airspace. They carry retroreflective decoys, surveillance equipment, bombs, attack drones, or radio repeaters that help with long-range drone guidance. They have been instrumental in attacks on refineries, railways, and other high-value targets. While inconspicuous and hard to pick up on radar, the trick isn't always to hide— Russian crews unload Pantsirs, Tors, Buks, even S-400 missiles at these aerostats, especially when they drift around sensitive areas like Moscow.
