Morta nel silenzio generale Si chiamava Monica Esposito (in alto a destra) e aveva 55 anni. Il 16 maggio scorso, a Modena, è stata travolta da un’auto lanciata deliberatamente sulla folla in pieno centro. L’autore del gesto è Salim El Koudri, un 31enne di origine marocchina. Subito dopo, il sindaco ha fatto un evento "per la pace". Dopo oltre due mesi di agonia in ospedale, oggi Monica è morta. È la prima vittima di quello che appare chiaramente come un attentato islamista. Eppure, per lei non c’è stato alcun cordoglio istituzionale: nessun evento indetto dal sindaco, nessun corteo, nessuna manifestazione di piazza, nessuna attenzione mediatica. Solo un silenzio assordante, durato due mesi interi, mentre lei lottava tra la vita e la morte. Nessun giornale, nessun opinionista, nessun politico ha parlato dell'attentato e delle decine di Feriti. Staranno zitti anche davanti alla morte? Come se questa vittima fosse più scomoda delle altre. I’m excited to share that in a week, on July 27, my short book Hamas and Its Two Million Hostages will be published in paperback and as an eBook. It traces Hamas’s rise in Gaza; its motivations, the ideology that shaped its rule, and the road to October 7; interwoven with my own experience growing up under its ascent. I reflect on key elements of Gaza’s recent history and Hamas’s assault on the Palestinian national project. While not a full memoir or exhaustive history, the book offers a clear, accessible overview for readers often misled about Gaza and the Islamist movement that dominates it. The book’s argument is direct: Hamas has inflicted catastrophic harm on Palestinians, turning Gazans into hostages of a violent, rigid movement whose decisions led to the Strip’s devastation, all while accounting for Israeli policy choices that helped entrench Hamas and made dislodging it difficult. This short book is my case against the terror organization and against those who cast it as legitimate “resistance.” It is a call to promote Palestinian agency, accountability, and responsibility, even within the profound imbalance of power dynamics with Israel. Palestinians urgently need honest assessment and self‑reflection from a genuinely pro‑Palestine perspective to learn from past mistakes and chart a different path toward safety, prosperity, freedom, and well‑being. I don’t know how to stop these executions anymore. I woke up again to the news that another young protester had been hanged. Yes, every morning I wake up wondering whose name I’ll have to write next, and whether anyone will care enough to read it. Today, right after the call to prayer, the regime hanged Mehdi Khaneki. 26 years old. A law graduate. Arrested during the January uprising in Karaj. The regime released a video of men raiding his “hideout,” his head shaved, staged for the cameras. A production shot after his arrest to build the case against him. This is what passes for evidence in the Islamic Republic. His family was put under pressure and warned to stay silent and cut off all contact with the media. This is their answer to international pressure. Not stopping the killings. Hiding them. Mehdi Khaneki’s name has been added to the long list of people murdered by the Islamic Republic inside its prisons. How can I ask the international community, especially those leaders who claim to stand for human rights and democracy, to put pressure on the Islamic Republic and demand that it #StopExecutionsInIran?
