"Iraq cannot fully police its own airspace, where US military action has become part of a wider conflict unfolding above a country that says it wants no part in it," writes @HayderSH. The consequences of another illegal war, 23 years ago, still hurt Iraqis thenationalnews.com/opinion/commen…

The US/Israel war on Iran is revealing Iraq’s deeper problem: a state that was not built to withstand crisis.

There’s an entrenched perception among Iraq’s militias that INIS is a CIA cut-out and remains an institution deeply tied to the U.S. since it was created in 2004. Even after Sudani carried out purges of the organization when he entered office, there are still segments of the organization that have maintained ties to the CIA, particularly on the anti-ISIS campaign. This attack is best understood as a coercive signal, intended to deter intelligence cooperation with the U.S. military going forward. In an active wartime condition, any internal collaboration would be considered a direct threat to the militias and their operational security.

"... contempt for international law may seem convenient for states that believe their power shields them from consequences. But in a world where destructive force is widely distributed, weakening the rules meant to protect civilians invites others to do the same. The result is not greater security but a downward spiral in which every side claims necessity while civilians pay the price."

Day 21 of the U.S.–Israeli war on Iran coincided with Nowruz, as 640 strikes were recorded nationwide. Tehran bore the highest share of attacks, while civilians were killed and injured, and mass travel created heavy traffic toward northern provinces.
