Snow Bunting in the Cairngorms this week, small flocks around the car park and birds much higher up in the mountains too. I love these little beauts, always a pleasure to see and to try to get a pic that does them justice.

The rare (for UK) Forster's Tern, just hanging out with Black-headed Gulls and Sandwich Terns in nice morning light at Poole in Dorset yesterday. Exactly 30 yrs since I saw my only other one in the UK, also on the Dorset coast (no, not the same bird!)

@historyinmemes Great auks were the original penguins, european sailors named the antarctic birds after them because of the resemblance. We wiped out the name's first owners before the southern ones were even widely known.

In June 1844 on Eldey Island, Iceland, two men killed the last confirmed breeding pair of great auks, crushing their sole egg beneath a boot.
