is this a serious question? there are like 12 maoists in the us and no peasant base to mobilize. the ultra wealthy control every aspect of our lives from buying elections to eroding regulations. genuinely an embarrassing take.

Matt Damon has the prototypical American face. It's perfect for Saving Private Ryan or Good Will Hunting. But whenever he plays a character from ancient or medieval European history, it just feels like you're watching a present-day American playing dress-up.

@sheepman_bot I like Roth a lot. I think it makes sense to that Murakami would like his work - even beyond his general interest in contemporary American literature around that time, there's a significant psychoanalytic and metafictional element they have in common.

@AlexMaskill Do you like Philip Roth? It was translated and published in Japan in 1977. It is very interesting that Haruki Murakami, a world-renowned author, has said he likes it.

@elladorn_ ah I guess I'm defining "cinephiles" as a subculture, as opposed to an unselfconscious mass audience of "movie-goers" and "people who might watch a film they see on Netflix" and so on i.e. most normal people

@AlexMaskill Also think the cinephile mass culture (at least for Gen Z) has v much been sustained by Letterboxd, the literary world has never had the same canonising/discovery infrastructure

I'm really optimistic about lit.salon as a "Letterboxd for books," w similar curated list discovery functions, a brand new tagging system and a very smooth & fast UI. Could have a huge impact if scaled (currently only 300 daily users)

@elladorn_ Meanwhile in literature, that mass audience is gone, it's just a contest between subcultures - and the subcultures least concerned with sophistication both have the largest most coordinated subculture and are used to (and down for) territorial contest.

@elladorn_ I'm still skeptical - Letterboxd's culture comes from the cinephile subculture still having a mass audience to define itself against via sophistication, and the mass audience doesn't care enough to crowd out the audience of (aspiring and accomplished) cinephiles.

@suzyputrid Work out a serious progression of skill and song learning, and practice for an hour for at least five days a week, and ideally every day. Sustain this for a month and you'll see the settling in of some basic skills. Sustain it for six months and you'll see drastic improvement.
