Very interesting elements in Rwanda’s new maternity leave law: -A woman whose child dies after birth has rights to maternity leave benefits. The employer pays the woman a salary of 14 weeks, including eight weeks covered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). -Increases maternity leave from 12 to 14 weeks, with the two extra weeks covered by the SSA as reimbursement to employers. - In situations where a baby is born premature, the employer pays the mother a salary corresponding to the duration remaining until the standard delivery period of nine months. After that, she is entitled to maternity leave of 14 weeks and she receives maternity benefits. - In case of delivery complications for either mother or her newborn, a woman is granted, by the Social Security Administration, maternity leave benefits for an additional period that does not exceed one month. -A woman who gives birth to a stillborn child after start of 20th week of pregnancy is paid eight weeks’ salary, including two weeks covered and reimbursed to the employer by the SSA. -If a woman on maternity leave passes away before her maternity leave ends and the child survives, the Social Security Administration pays the father or legal guardian of the child maternity leave benefits that the woman would have benefited. newtimes.co.rw/article/18973/…

#PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of sexual HIV acquisition by 99% and the risk of transmission during injecting drug use by at least 74%. More needs to be done to ensure that all people who need and want access to PrEP have it!
