A Syrian artist living in Berlin posted a video now trending across Germany. Germany welcomed Syrian refugees during and after the civil war and have no colonial past in Syria to atone for. What do they get in return? Resentment, a Third-Worldist rant basically about Western colonizers as eternal oppressors. The contrast with Syria itself is what makes this interesting. Syrians inside Syria today want the West. They want a peaceful Damascus, a functioning banking system, trade, integration into the global economy. The loudest anticolonial voices and movements now sit in Western capitals advocating for things their own people aren’t aligned with.

That doesn’t make me greedy it means I value good service. I’m not brainwashed into thinking tips are automatic they should be earned through quality. Tipping shouldn’t be something people rely on to make a living, and constantly asking for more than what’s reasonable is what actually comes off as greedy. I’m not tipping someone just for doing their job, like I wouldn’t tip the person who sold me my car or a cashier at the mall.

@mpenzo82 @NoContextHumans It’s not about culture or being cheap if I’m already paying for the service, why should I pay extra? A tip should be for exceptional service, not expected by default. If that’s an issue, then provide better service… otherwise I’ll just do it myself.

@NoContextHumans Don’t come to the US if you’re going to be cheap. Tipping drives better customer service, and leads to higher total wages for service staff. You don’t have to like it but just as you’d be mad at an American for not respecting your culture you should show the same respect you seek
