@BugbearBrothers You could run the most absurd combats, like multiple Gods from Deities & Demigods. You could make up crazy puzzles with no solution, 'cause they'd always have some resources to overcome it. All the players are super-competent after years with the same characters. I loved it!

H4, The Throne of Bloodstone, 1988, by Michael Dobson and Douglas Niles, with cover art by Keith Parkinson, and interior art by Graham Nolan. Part 4 of 4 in the Bloodstone saga, this monster weighs in at a hefty 96 pages, and comes with a foldout map. The module is intended for characters level 18 - 100, which is the highest level specified for any D&D adventure. Included are two sets of pre-generated characters; the first set is the same seven characters that have run through the Bloodstone Saga, most of which are now 19th level. The second set are based on great characters of mythology and all have at least one class at 100th level. These characters, who are much more powerful than the versions appearing in the Legends & Lore manual are Perseus, Circe, Hermes and Artemis.

@Mtravenecho1 So Tieflings were first playable in AD&D 2e (Complete Planeswalker Handbook). A typical ability was to create darkness, but 2e let you randomly determine abilities because of their chaotic heritage. It was cool stuff! You can find a summary here: adnd2e.fandom.com/wiki/Tiefling_…

This week marks 15 years since the release of REVENGE OF THE IRON LICH—the very first in the "fourthcore" series of tournament deathtrap dungeons. Hard to believe it's been so long! ☠️

@Gingerblast @micpewpew The Manga Delicious in Dungeon has Kobolds based off Basic D&D, where they're dog-like men, rather than lizard~y like later versions. If you took this approach to Kobolds, you could totally have a corgi or pug-like character!

@micpewpew If it was real D&D, that would be a pug instead of a corgi. Obviously.

@SandyofCthulhu An awesome addition to AD&D-era monster manuals would be villain or NPC classes, e.g. assassin, anti-paladin, witch-doctor, etc. Presented the way 2e handles dragons of various age categories, so they're more immediately useable as "monsters."

Just so you are aware, the obvious answer to "Then why did Gary create the Assassin character class?" is "To be enemies." It's a great class to give to evil criminals, Drow, and so forth. Potent enemies make the game more fun, and Gary gave you plenty of them. Heck, some part of Gary's example is what helped me in creating Call of Cthulhu, the game in which the balance between good and evil is the worst ever, yet you're still working towards the good.

@AutumnRoseYT @CentamoreJarrid I think this one and Miracle Raven were intended for Demise/Ruin without being direct support, but they still need a LOT more to be viable even as rogue strategies.

@YoDanno Has anyone catalogued AD&D items like this "loco Weed" (+6 Morale for 2 hours) that while nonmagical, have pretty dramatic effects? I'm always interested whenever "treasure" comes up that isn't necessarily magical and has potential worldbuilding implications.

When you or your players adventured through X1 Isle of Dread, did they come across the Deranged Ankyosaurus? Take some of the loco weed for themselves? And did anyone ever actually find the Ring of Regeneration that was IN THE BELLY of the Plesiosaurus?

@WizardGoesBoom As if the monk's life couldn't get any tougher, that -7 to hit is BRUTAL. The two-handed sword buff is interesting though, as it gets +2 to hit in every situation that matters, and who cares if it gets no bonus against AC 10, cause the target is already AC 10.

I love this table. You could hit things better or worse depending on which weapon you used against what armor type. Adds to verisimilitude. Perhaps modern D&D could use something like this.
Dean, Foreteller of Destiny@hill_jowett

@GorgonsGrimoire I know, it was wonky. That is why THAC0 was not a term at the time (even when mentioned in long-form in the DMG). It became a term that DMs used (Isle of the Ape) because their creatures did not have these adjustments. Players never used it till 2e.

@LibertyForAll19 With all kinds of higher-tech stuff you find in dungeons (Think Legend of Zelda), primitive guns are reasonable. AD&D 2e got a lot right in striking a balance. Guns do a ton of damage (1d10), the exploding dice mechanic makes them unique, BUT they take 2 rounds to reload.

@thiseffingm My solution: Unlike other called shots/stunts, the target gets a saving throw to resist pernanently debilitating ones, like having a limb or head severed. Wearing a helmet grants advantage on saving throws to resist called shots/stunts targeting the head.

Called Shot Design Procedure Make called shot system. Realize head is almost always the best target. Everyone swings at head, regardless of penalties, always chance for critical. Someone asks “what were we aiming at before?”. Realize this is bogging things down. Go back to HP.

@FelixJurecek @SandyofCthulhu A typical English reader will not be familiar with the term Weltanschauung. However, plenty of terms /phrases from other languages get incorporated into English when no english term exists. "Schadenfreude" is a common one english readers would be familiar with for example.

@SandyofCthulhu I've never seen an English speaker using the word "Weltanschauung" before. May I ask - is that an understandable term for "normal" English readers? (I'm Austrian, so I speak German)

My game Call of Cthulhu is the number one roleplaying system in Japan. I believe this is because knights & wizards are not really the Japanese weltanschauung but everyone likes scary monsters. And it does so well, that Japan sells more copies of Call of Cthulhu than the rest of the world combined. Another interesting bit is that 70% of the players in Japan are women. I suspect because Call of Cthulhu isn't combat-centered. It's mysteries and creepy scares, which women like as much as men. "What does this mean, Sandy?" The average player of Call of Cthulhu worldwide is an 18-35 year old Japanese woman.

@Gingerblast I recall @KasimirUrbanski making a great point about how most RPGs were poorly-organized and suggested better-organized sequential play procedures like what you find in most Board Games & War Games and this really helped in my own RPG writing.

There is a lot that RPGs can learn from board game design and vice-versa, I'm always baffled when people refer to me as a board gamer as if it's somehow derogatory Appreciate this post 💚
