@Sola_GPT @CapturingChrist That's a fun game 60 years after the apostles is "late"? Lol The same Eucharistic theology of Justin is present in earlier writers and the new testament

In short, early Church gatherings were intimately Catholic. Gavin quotes Justin Martyr in his video saying the following: “For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.” This is simply not compatible with Baptist theology.
Gavin Ortlund@gavinortlund

What would it have been like to attend a worship gathering in 150 AD? New video out today, recounting Justin Martyr's description and drawing implications. I am also going to make this one into a shorter animated video, Lord willing (will be a few months).

When you say, "Church history is on the Protestant's side," I assume you don't mean to say, "if you look at the pre-Protestant history of the Church, Christians primarily and decisively held to distinctively Protestant convictions and doctrines," but rather, "the historical data makes most sense under the Protestant approach to Church history" - i.e. the historical record displays an early purity among the early Christians that slowly accreted doctrinal and disciplinary novelties/abnormalities as time went on. When Catholics look at Church History, we see (and attempt to apologetically ground) an institutional continuity and an organic doctrinal continuity throughout all ages. When Protestants look at Church History, they see (and attempt to apologetically ground) discontinuity and departure from earlier doctrinal purity.

Church history is on the protestants side. But we have to actually teach it.

@AllRoadsDigital you didn’t provide a single quotation from the LDS standard works, an official proclamation, or First Presidency statement. Odd. It would only take one.

Alright last post on this since it's getting lost in the details. Jacob Hansen presented the LDS godhead as: The father, son, and holy Spirit are all Jehovah The LDS church's official position is: Only Jesus IS Jehovah, with rare instances of nuance (how Jehovah expresses, not who Jehovah is) The issue is that Jacob presents his own positions as the LDS position, even when it contradicts the LDS position. This is potentially deceptive and confusing for the audience, especially non-LDS. I know I am an outsider but my sources are: 1916 prophet/apostles declaration Recent general conference quotes All the official materials I could find Fact check approved by: Active LDS in replies Grok (lol) LDS friends An LDS missionary No one has given any modern LDS prophet or apostle statements that contradict what I'm saying - just scholarly/apologetic positions. If you want to have your own theology, go for it, but the distinction between personal apologetics positions and what the LDS church actually teaches should be made clear.

@AllRoadsDigital @ThoughtfulSaint Jehovah is primarily the premortal Jesus Christ, though divine titles may occasionally function representationally in the Godhead No need to "go against prophets"

@boggs_is_cringe My entire article shows what it is, what it isn't, and what it cannot be. It is a symbol. You yourself just acknowledged it cannot be the flesh and blood. It's not real presence as ancient Christians practiced and died for.

@AllRoadsDigital The screenshot I shared is a quotation of President Eyring in general conference. Let’s be honest, if there was a single binding statement precluding real presence in LDS theology, you would’ve quoted it at the beginning of this convo. As LDS bot noted, no such statement exists.

Yeah I mean Iirc you originally said the sacrament was the flesh and blood so already changed up without admitting it Im bringing you what the LDS prophets and apostles and official docs say and youre bringing AI 😂 If you want to make up your own theology go for it! Thankfully as Catholic I can just have the real presence of Jesus and the same Eucharist celebrated by the early Christian Martyrs 2000 years ago! Id really reccomend you look into the ancient Christianity and receive the true real presence 😁

@AllRoadsDigital Like I said, we don’t have a developed theology on this topic. I would say that the idea that the person of Christ, by the power of his spirit, is truly present in the bread and water is a live option for LDS. LDSbot agrees.

@AllRoadsDigital Section 130 is binding but refers to Christ’s physical body and spirit body—not his omnipresent spirit or light. Christ can truly be present by the power of his spirit even if his physical and spiritual body is in heaven

@AllRoadsDigital I already provided examples of modern LDS apostles such as Elder Holland saying otherwise. It’s not an ontological claim at all. I already skimmed them. Saw nothing precluding real presence.

Four Catholic Saints Prophets of the Trinity Saint Patrick (461 AD) Saint Francis of Assisi (1226 AD) Saint Hildegard Von Bingen (1179 AD) Saint Padre Pio (1968 AD) They were real people, real spiritual fruit, real miracles, from ancient to modern, and they all point to the truth of the Trinity and Christ's Holy Church. You can read their own writings, words, sermons, and songs.

Jehovah is literally Jesus is the official LDS teaching. I don't think you'll find any LDS prophet or apostle in the last 100 years that says otherwise. That's the point. Like an ontological claim. As for the article, you can just skim through the quotes in the LDS teaching section. The LDS prophets and theology and even the website explicitly reject the real pressence and make it metaphysically impossible l.

@AllRoadsDigital I read it back when you posted it though I clearly don’t remember every thing. If there is a specific statement that takes real presence off the table for us then please share it. But first you should admit that “Jehovah” is not exhausted by the person of Jesus in LDS teaching
