Yesterday marked 2 years since we lost Gunnery Sergeant Giorgio “Gio” Kirylo, a dedicated MARSOC Marine Raider who passed away on July 18, 2024, at age 38.
Born in New Jersey in 1986, Gio was a high school student when the events of 9/11 unfolded. Like so many of his generation, he answered the call to service and enlisted in the Marine Corps shortly after graduation.
He quickly rose to the elite ranks of Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), earning his place as a Marine Raider. Over a distinguished career, he deployed 6 times in support of the Global War on Terror, facing some of the conflict’s most unforgiving battlegrounds.
He endured heavy combat in Sangin, Afghanistan, one of the war’s deadliest districts. Later he played a key intelligence role alongside SEAL Team 7 during the Battle of Mosul in Iraq, helping orchestrate operations to dismantle ISIS and crush the caliphate.
A highly decorated warrior, he retired with honor in 2021 after years spent at the tip of the spear.
Retirement brought its own hard fight. Living with the invisible wounds of traumatic brain injury and combat trauma, Gio navigated the often frustrating maze of military and VA healthcare. Rather than let it defeat him, he channeled that struggle into purpose.
In his adopted hometown of San Diego, he became a passionate advocate for fellow veterans and those unable to speak for themselves, always standing firm for justice and those in need. In his final years, he rediscovered his faith, drawing strength from his church communities in San Diego.
Gio was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery, surrounded by the love of friends, family, and the many rescue animals whose lives he touched. From the 6 combat deployments and the streets of Sangin and Mosul, to his tireless fight for veterans back home, he lived a life of service until the very end.
Two years have passed, but he is not forgotten. Rest easy, Gio.

I was being facetious to emphasize that Rubio doesn't understand what international law, sovereignty or jurisdiction are.
Instead of arguing past each other, let me ask you something. I assume you're a lawyer. Rubio went to a mediocre law school. Do you think he ever read Hans Kelsen seriously? Or any other real jurisprudential theory?
He said the ICC is a threat to American jurisdiction and sovereignty. But that's totally wrong. And it seems like he just lacks a basic understanding of fundamental concepts.

The US and UK signed a bilateral extradition treaty in 2003
After an arrest, there’s a judicial phase - a court determines if the request meets the treaty requirements
If the court rules they can be extradited, then SecState has final decision.

@Ivan_Snook US never ratified ICC, so it’s never recognized ICC’s jurisdiction. So that is distinguishable from this treaty.
If a court holds Tate can be extradite and SecState refuses, that will have much more significant consequence

SecDef Austin had surgery Dec 22, 2023 and failed to inform the President. That was a clear failure on his part. He didn’t return to the Pentagon until Jan 29, 2024.
From Dec 22, 2023 to Jan 29, 2024, the Pentagon still held 12 press briefings.

CENTCOM Statement on Recently Fallen, Missing U.S. Service Members TAMPA, Fla. — On July 17, two U.S. service members in Jordan were killed in action as U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and partner forces defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Additionally, one service member is currently missing. Four American service members were medically evacuated to Jordanian hospitals. They have since been discharged. Other personnel who were evaluated for minor injuries have returned to duty. Out of respect for the families, CENTCOM will withhold additional information, including the identities of the fallen warriors, until 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified.
