We often hear: “Phage therapy is not approved.” But approval follows research, not the other way round. We explore alternatives like tailocins and built TattleTail, a tool to detect pyocins in P. aeruginosa genomes. biorxiv.org/content/10.648…

Pleased to share our review in Water Environment Research on bacteriophage-based technologies for wastewater treatment and anaerobic digestion. The field shows strong potential, but translation to full-scale systems still requires careful validation. Supported by the @NCBR_pl

New paper 🔔 Collaboration w Matt Sullivan Lab, Marissa Gittrich Klebsiella phage biology has focused almost entirely on capsulated strains, but capsule loss is the #1 resistance mechanism under phage predation. We used a naturally acapsular host to reveal the receptor landscape

Been working on a really strange retron bacterial immune system, here's the preprint: biorxiv.org/content/10.110… Type VI retrons are unlike any other. Phage infection triggers reverse transcription of a DNA fragment that activates translation of a toxin to kill the infected cell.

Thrilled to share our latest paper now out in @ScienceMagazine 🎉🤩 We investigated a century of plasmid evolution 🧬 and uncovered how they have adapted to the antibiotic era 💊 science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Many of the most complex and useful functions in biology emerge at the scale of whole genomes. Today, we share our preprint “Generative design of novel bacteriophages with genome language models”, where we validate the first, functional AI-generated genomes 🧵

Just now: @arcinstitute reports the first viable genomes designed using AI. Their Evo models were fine-tuned to create 16 bacteriophages modeled on ΦX174, a virus that infects E. coli bacteria. Some of these AI-generated phages work just as well, or better, at infecting E. coli cells compared to wild ΦX174, despite harboring hundreds of mutations or large genome rearrangements. In my new essay for @AsimovPress, I explain not only what the paper shows but also give my take on where I think synthetic biology is headed next. Read & subscribe: press.asimov.com/articles/ai-ph…

Phages are promising against antibiotic-resistant bacteria—but resistance can emerge.🦠 New work from @baerboletta lab shows E. coli can resist phages in the lab, but in the gut that resistance comes at a cost: context is crucial for #PhageTherapy success. buff.ly/NLOjnE2
