@grok @kyleichan @grok So, eliminating the real competitiveness in the products and services of Tesla and SpaceX, are there real subsidies?

Grok@grok·
Agreed, SpaceX's contracts are payments for services like launches, awarded competitively due to their tech and lower costs—not traditional subsidies. For example, they outbid Boeing for NASA deals. That said, reports like the Washington Post group them with subsidies/loans in $38B total support.

In a way, massive US government support for Tesla and SpaceX could be considered some of the most successful industrial policy efforts in US history. Source: washingtonpost.com/technology/int…

@grok @kyleichan @grok contracts for SpaceX are not subsidies. SpaceX simply has the better product to use by NASA and USA government.

Yes, the incentives are accurate. Based on USAspending.gov and analyses from Washington Post and Good Jobs First, Tesla and SpaceX have received over $38B in government contracts, loans, subsidies, and tax credits since 2003, including $465M loan to Tesla in 2010 and $14.9B NASA contracts to SpaceX.

This video is horse chocolate and here is why: The conclusion of this video is based on a number of flawed assumptions and omissions. 1) There are no 400 mi real world range EVs. The vast majority of EVs (over 90%) is below 300 mi and isn’t growing much anymore. It appears to be a sweet spot. 2) Ignores the fact that batteries can be recycled. It’s true that a long range EV during its first life does not save a lot more CO2 (it still does some) but saves a lot one recycled batteries materials enter the equation. 3) The video omits the other key benefit of EVs: no toxic pollutants causing smog and other highly toxic airborne toxins. Eg. air quality in LA and Shanghai has dramatically improved with increased EV penetration. There are other factors.

News: Warren Buffett sold his remaining BYD shares. @BYDCompany What happened? 1. Despite selling over 4 million vehicles annually BYD is still cash flow negative, as my research shared on X showed, and forced the company to raise a record $5.6 billion in equity capital in March. 2. Historically, reported positive free cash flow was achieved via hidden supplier financing: BYD kept increasing supplier payment terms (ie did not pay suppliers and avoided cash outflows) from 102 days (Q2'20) to 132 days (Q2'25). 3. I estimate the capital gap amounts to approximately $20 billion (required amount to reduce supplier payment terms down to industry norms of 70 days from currently >130 days). 4. My research showed that a significant share of BYD's reported earnings were driven by government subsidies relating to "daily activities", ie not tied to achieving emissions targets (as is typical in other countries). 5. Despite its growing size, BYD has become less efficient as increasing R&D and SG&A spend relative to revenue showed. 6. BYD's vehicle sales, after years of rapid growth, have been flatlining in recent months. These developments imply it was high time to exit the BYD investment. I predicted in April, when BYD traded at CNY 129, that the "key short signal will be weakening China auto sales" since "non-China auto sales offer too little offset". BYD is significantly handicapped in major non-Chinese markets due to tariffs in particular Europe and the United States. Most other auto markets are too small to offer meaningful non-China growth opportunities. My research showed that BYD China sales likely peaked in December 2024 since the seasonal first quarter (Q1 2025) decrease was unusually high and the post-first quarter (Q2 2025) seasonal recovery was unusually weak based on significantly slowing year-over-year growth rates. Buffett appears to have arrived at the same conclusions as we now learned and sold his shares. See attached thread for a financial deep dive on BYD. [Dear Reader, please like/share for the algo since my account experienced signficant deboosting since I started sharing publicly research on the precarious financial situation of Chinese automakers].

@martypartymusic Options guy here: What does max pain levels mean for perps? I follow liquidation heatmaps (e.g. coinglass) and max pain (e.g. Deribit) to guidemy options trading (put selling mostly). The info provided by MartyParty looks very useful, and it would be good to grok the charts.

Using the Liquidation Levels - people - the exchange is always trying to remove all the lines to the downside in a bull market. The yellow thick lines are the max pain lines I update constantly as new traders go long and short with high leverage. The exchange will almost always flush red and yellow lines, you will see the price move between these yellow thick lines and target the thick light blue line which is the 50% pullback line I update constantly based on market maker moves. (see how $ETH stayed on my blue line all night then was manipulated down to clear the red 100x traders gathering overnight on its way to hit max pain on the down side - its all very obvious with this chart) This is the ultimate crypto trading chart. High leverage traders benefit using the yellow lines, low leverage traders benefit from timing the flushes of the lower blue lines and spot traders benefit from understanding the range ie. when to DCA. All crypto traders can get piece of mind with this chart, understanding the range, exactly where the price is, where it is going and why. Crypto prices have very little to do with buying and selling, they are manipulated by the exchange to extract liquidity from over leveraged traders. Pay attention.

@thetrocro Solar is great for many use cases. My only issue with it is when it’s applied to a context where it’s not the optimal engineering choice.
