@cutlassmagazine My family is Guyanese & use it freely. It wasn't until college that I learned it was a slur from an Indo-Trini friend. It's reclaimation reminds me of the use of the nword n the States. Don't know why it's so hard for some to learn a thing & respect people's wishes re language

Regardless of how you use “coolie,” be aware that there is tremendous nuance around it. If you do reclaim it just know that others have not and the context in how you say it matters tremendously.

This is false. Most Indo-Trinidadians view “coolie” as an offensive ethnic slur. Indo-Surinamese people largely do not identify as “coolie” either. Most Indo-Jamaicans now live outside of Jamaica and have a complex relationship with the word too.
