The way Canada and Europe do it is to ration care. No one who proposes Medicare for All ever mentions that. In reality, care is always rationed because the desire for medical care is apparently infinite but money is limited. But even recognizing this, Europe does it more severely and openly than the US does.

Sorry but if you don't support doubling (at minimum) everyone's taxes, you don't actually support Medicare For All. It requires 3 trillion a year, every year, for the remainder of the nation's existence. You can't do that by tweaking the capital gains tax.

It is, though, because bad red cards have been given countless times at World Cups and no head of state has ever intervened to try to get the suspensions overruled. The argument put to me here is that Americans expect matches to be, as much as possible, between two full-strength sides, which I think only makes sense in the low-stakes world of American sport.

I realise now that the American bewilderment at red card game suspensions stems from the complete lack of risk in franchise-based leagues. When losing carries very little long-term risk, and is actually rewarded via the draft system, the best you can hope for is for each match to be the best set piece possible. I presume this also explains the “We will win the game!” chants and home and away fans sitting together. Every game is basically a low stakes friendly.
