I enjoyed reading and reviewing Richard Langlois's "The Corporation and the Twentieth Century," a monumental reappraisal of the managerial corporation in political, economic, and cultural context, for eh.net. eh.net/book_reviews/t…

@alz_zyd_ Yes but then you have to get an accounting PhD. Price seems right.

It seems like if you want to get a job in academia, an accounting PhD is one of the easiest routes. Interestingly, it seems to be much easier to get an industry job with an economics PhD than an accounting PhD. But the accounting academic job market is surprisingly good

@Bellmanequation Reminds me of my one grad school prof who explained why he didn't believe in partial credit: "Do you know how time consuming R&Rs are? I like my papers to be accepted on the first round!"

Scene: A friend, asst prof at a top department, at a faculty lunch. Him: I just got a tough rejection. The referees were split & editor sided with the negative one & rejected the paper. What should I do? Sr. Prof: That’s never happened to me. I guess people try another journal?

The strength of nominating letters will be the primary basis for selecting the pool of finalists for the prize. Strong nominating letters should provide first-hand accounts of how the nominee has proved to be an inspirational classroom teacher or thesis supervisor.

Word is, every NSF proposal now has to say something about AI. I guess I might as well make this useful. Which AI tools would you like me to test out and compare on a large data entry task?

In well paying fields like economics, the salary premium of a PhD is also valuable even considering it takes 5 or 6 years to finish. The typical initial salary from a prestigious econ PhD program is about 200k, more if you do consulting for the private sector. Many people from developing countries do it because they can use a PhD to immigrate to the "first world." Others do it because they couldn't find a job straight out of undergrad and decide starting gradschool is the way to go and they are too scared to get away from academia with a MA degree.

@ben_golub Doing a PHD without a deep sense of curiosity is a bizzare choice. Why do people do things like that?

@alz_zyd_ Since all my research subjects are long dead, and the best I can do is read what they happened to write down about their thoughts and motivations, I've never understood why more young economists don't just *talk* to people.

Frequent convo between me and PhD students Me: "After 400 hours of data analysis on industry X, have you talked to anyone actually working in industry X" Student (S): "No" Me: "Why not?" Student: "Where would I find someone in industry X willing to talk to me"

Hey all, are there any master's programs for economics (in the US or elsewhere) that offer financial aid or merit scholarships?

@RebelEconProf It's just the opposite of best practice if you care about your students' well-being. Routine and distraction are really helpful.

I was going to post “stop doing this,” but that’s insufficient. Look in a mirror and ask yourself what kind of environment you’re creating on campus for you to think that this should be necessary.
