For MA insurers the fate of reimbursement is literally in star-ratings. CMS continues to raise the bar on star ratings and it's only when the plans go live that insurers learn their fate. $HUM is sinking after one of its biggest plans was cut 4.5 to 3.5 stars for 2025.

CMS will pay plans over 12b in bonuses based on star ratings in 2023. We find that stars don't predict better outcomes and mask inequities in care. If we're going to spend so much here we need to ensure the stars are actually meaningful and equitable. jamanetwork.com/journals/jama-…
