@AmaraD25896 @Mubarak_mubious The most precious gemstones in Egypt were Lapis Lazuli, Emerald, and Aquamarine lol. Crazy how you have to make up history to justify getting conned. The prestige and value of diamond was 100% made up by Debeers in the last 150 or so years.

@SubparSammich @Mubarak_mubious Diamonds have been prized and symbolic in civilizations as far back as ancient Egypt. No one was “scammed”, De Beers marketed a product and people chose to buy it, that’s how a free market works. If you don’t see them as special or valuable, that’s fine, but plenty of others do.

You are WILDLY wrong. Moissanite is a 9.3 on the Mohs scale, with diamond being 10. It's extremely hard and durable. It's considered pretty much equivalent to diamond in wearability. It's harder than emerald, topaz, ruby, and even sapphire. Harder than every single other gemstone people wear except diamond. It's actually just as clear as diamond but has an even higher refractive index. That's the part that gives diamonds their sparkle. Your "cultural history" line is also 100% completely made up. Diamonds were seen as inferior gemstones to colored stones for all of recorded history. The single only reason diamonds are seen as premium stones today is 100% because of Debeers marketing and monopolizing in the early 1900s. They used their monopoly to massively restrict supply and huge amounts of money in advertising to push diamonds. This was done because diamonds are not rare at all. They are far more common than the vast majority of other gemstones. Sorry dude, you got scammed. People who defend "natural diamonds" are either the con artists who still peddle them or bonafide morons.

@margotzaou34456 @araynahb People still have pretty outdated ideas about the natural diamond industry. There’s been so much progress over the years and conflict diamonds are mostly a thing of the past. I’m surprised more people aren’t aware of how much things have changed for the better.

@BethTalks2 I get your concern, it’s completely valid. But you don’t need diamonds from another planet, most diamonds mined today are responsibly and ethically sourced under the Kimberley Process, and many companies are investing heavily in traceability. Its encouraging to see things change.

@Spartan_Bubble @Dommcming @Mubarak_mubious The natural diamond industry has been around for over 100 years, its worth tens of billions globally, and millions of carats are still being mined and sold each year. It’s evolving, but definately not collapsing, anytime soon.

@SubparSammich @Mubarak_mubious if moissanite was the superior stone, it would be the gemstone of choice, but it’s not. natural diamonds aren’t popular just because of marketing, but because they have cultural history, and are durable for daily wear. people like them, which is why they’ve stuck around.

Diamonds. Moissanite is the superior clear gemstone at 1% the price. Lab grown diamonds are 100% genuine diamonds with flawless quality. "Natural diamonds" are the exact same thing as a lab grown just with impurities and trash quality. Anyone who buys "natural diamonds" anymore is a bonafide retard and should be laughed at

@outrage2552672 @glassj3n My 2 cents: I don’t really get the lab-grown diamond hype, looking at history with lab-grown emeralds and rubies, they’ve never really overtaken natural stones in the long run. I do think the same will happen with lab-grown diamonds, since not everyone wants a mass-produced stone

@Femgeta Saying De Beers told people a diamond was the only stone you can use is a bit of an exaggeration. It was an advertising campaign, not a rule or law, and people were always free to choose whatever ring they wanted.

Remember when de beers artificially inflated the price of diamonds and made ruthless campaigns telling you a diamond is the ONLY stone you can use for wedding rings and that wedding rings are a MUST in the first place? The rich will always tread on the poor and squeeze our blood

@linmeitalks It was already pretty common for people to propose with engagement rings and exchange wedding rings before De Beers came along, they just popularized diamond engagement rings. A lot of what you’re describing already existed before them, you're overstating their influence.

1. It used to be survival. You’d be passed from your family to a man and your family would have one less mouth to feed, but if you were of social standing, a daughter was a bargaining chip to bring families closer together for status and business - still is in many countries- upper echelons 2. Men structured it so a women’s worth was based on whether she was chosen/ desirable and child bearing- no other element made a woman of worth historically and men still try to enforce that up till today. We see it online too “why aren’t you married, you got left to be a single mum, where are your children” 3. When women were finally finding their place in the world away from just being worthy based on a man’s desire or need ….. ie educating themselves, starting businesses and careers, not as eager to marry and have kids at 17/18, one of the most successful if not the most jewellery companies said no no no we need women to be desperate for marriage so let’s create a marketing campaign which suggested if a man doesn’t buy a woman a huge rock to display his love, then as a woman you aren’t shit…. This campaign got into the psyche of women and the desperation to be picked and married/ show of the ring took centre stage again - DeBeers 1947 - “A Diamond Is Forever” convinced the world that diamonds weren't just jewellery-they were a symbol of love, status, and commitment…. It was complete and utter gas to get people to spend thousands on a rock which wasn’t initially that rare or desirable, but also to reinstate/solidify marriage and gender roles.

@rembaba7340 @jonanelsen @joyjohnjoe @Breaking911 No, not today, maybe in the past, but modern De Beers only controls a fraction of diamond production, along with other companies around the world that all mine and supply natural diamonds to the market.

BREAKING: The United Arab Emirates has announced it will withdraw from OPEC after more than 50 years, with the move set to take effect May 1. The decision would allow the UAE to boost oil production without OPEC quota limits — a major shift that could impact global oil prices. The move is also being viewed by some as a potential win for President Trump, who has repeatedly accused OPEC of inflating prices and “ripping off the rest of the world.”

@PrometheusProTT @joyjohnjoe @Breaking911 That is not how the diamond industry works today, De Beers only controls a portion of supply, with other companies also mining and selling diamonds. How would supply restriction even work in a competitive market like that? It just doesnt make sense.

@joyjohnjoe @Breaking911 They limit production/supply to artificially increase the price. This is also done with diamonds, supply is artificially constricted controlled by the DeBeers Cartel to inflate the price.

@ecofinagency Natural diamond production is still going steady and mines are still operating. Despite all the negative sentiment, the natural diamond market hasn’t collapsed, it’s largely business as usual, which says a lot about the appeal and value of natural diamonds.

@FoxyHimbo @NoFilterSkin Reducing it to ‘women are dumb and easily manipulated’ is just misogyny. Marketing influences everyone, and engagement rings persist because people, men and women, chose to keep the tradition going, not because only one group was fooled.

@NoFilterSkin Every time a woman blames society, it just says "women are dumb as shit and easy to manipulate." Yeah, de Beers used a campaign to tell women they needed a diamond ring to boost sales. But women had to accept that and they currently are the ones who bitch about rings. So...

Women are not naturally obsessed with marriage; they are conditioned to center it from the moment they are born. Society begins socializing girls almost immediately into the belief that their ultimate purpose is to be chosen. Fairy tales and films like Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty and The Little Mermaid teach girls that female happiness arrives when a prince notices them, rescues them and chooses them. These stories rarely center a girl building a life for herself; they center her being rewarded with romantic selection.

@StoonedOnSol Yes, De Beers may have lowered the price of some diamonds at times, but they’ve also increased prices on others. Diamond prices constantly fluctuate. Every time prices change, people act like the industry is collapsing, yet that doesn’t happen with other gemstones or commodities

@Texasman @SoveyX That might have been the case in the past, but today there’s a global network of diamond mines and companies supplying the market, not just De Beers. Even if one player tried to control supply, there are plenty of other producers who would step in to meet demand.

Did you know the diamond engagement ring tradition was created by a diamond cartel? In the 1930s and 40s, De Beers was sitting on piles of unsold diamonds from the Great Depression. Demand was weak, inventory was high, and nothing says timeless romance like excess stock. So they hired an ad agency and launched one of the most successful campaigns in modern history: “A Diamond Is Forever.” The point was not love. It was demand creation. They turned an expensive rock into the universal symbol of commitment, something men were expected to buy if they were serious. Before that, most engagements did not involve diamonds at all. Then Hollywood amplified it. Magazines followed. Celebrities flashed rings. Carat size became status, devotion, and social proof all at once. Some companies did not just sell the stones. They helped create the expectation. Build the pressure first. Sell the solution second. That is how diamond engagement rings became tradition. Romance was real. The ring was the end of the sales funnel.

@rphfrank @SoveyX The “De Beers cartel” narrative is outdated. They are not as influential as they once were, and the diamond industry has multiple producers and strict regulations. No single company controls pricing or supply anymore.

@SoveyX And diamonds are not even rare. The DeBeers cartel artificially constrains supply to keep the price elevated. Now, lab created diamonds are just as good for a much lower price.
