I was encouraged by the strong participation and the shared determination to advance women’s role in our nation’s future. We affirmed our readiness as women to fully participate in One Person, One Vote elections. I highlighted key steps we have taken, including securing a 30% quota in electoral and political party laws to protect women’s representation. I thank H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for his continued commitment to supporting Somali women’s participation in elections. 🇸🇴

Today in Baidoa, I held a consultative meeting with women leaders and community members to listen to their perspectives, challenges, and priorities. Their voices are essential in shaping inclusive policies that respond to the realities faced by Somali women. In my remarks, I outlined key achievements of the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development over the past year, including the 30% women’s quota in electoral and political party laws, and progress on legislation addressing violence against women, FGM, and family rights. I also shared our forward priorities and called for unity and collective action to advance women’s empowerment and overcome shared challenges.

Any attack on Baidoa or South West State territory will be met with an appropriately severe military response. I urge president Hassan Sheikh to use the remainder of his short time in office to not spill Somali blood but help find a solution for a credible election process.

.@UNTMIS_ continues to closely follow developments in South West State. Political differences between the Federal Government of Somalia and Federal Member States should be resolved through dialogue. We are concerned about the implications of escalating tensions for Somalia’s stability, security, unity and the humanitarian situation. We call for constructive dialogue, and avoiding any further actions that could lead to violent conflict.

The Ministry of Internal Security of the Southwest State of Somalia strongly condemns the horrific incident that occurred today in villages under the districts of Waajid and Buurhakaba, where armed helicopters equipped with advanced weaponry were deployed. The Ministry expresses its deep sorrow that military assets and resources intended for combating extremist groups and safeguarding Somali civilians have instead been diverted to carry out attacks against innocent civilians. This appalling assault resulted in the deaths of 13 individuals, including 4 women, 7 men, and 2 children, who tragically lost their lives in a senseless act of violence. This reckless action clearly demonstrates the misuse and misdirection of military equipment, aircraft, and international assistance by the Federal Government of Somalia. Rather than being utilized in the fight against terrorism, these resources are being used to inflict harm upon the civilian population of the Southwest State. The Ministry of Internal Security affirms that this act constitutes a grave violation of human rights and fundamental principles of governance.
