Honestly, what an incredibly tone-deaf thing to say Only someone with no experience of chronic disease, coupled with the hubris of the Silicon Valley tech elite, could have the audacity to hit send on this drivel This guy is a “Member of Technical Staff” at OpenAI btw. Had to do a double take because I couldn’t believe what I was reading

@quasistable @ctjlewis he’s not really making a normative claim he’s free to feel however he wants i guess, but i think his reasoning is totally bonkers, as anyone who has suffered a sufficiently bad medical condition can tell you

here’s more context on what motivated this post, attached i have nothing against Suds, my issue is with the broader culture in tech that he represents and stands to benefit from i’m curious Nait - when you were in the decision room at a16z, did you ever feel uneasy about the talk of “moats” and “vendor lock-in”? did you ever consider that venture capital - an industry that’s supposed to be about productive capital allocation - is now largely dominated by monopolistic “kingmaking” strategies that stifle competition at the expense of society? how did you feel when you used a founder’s pedigree as a signal for whether to invest? x.com/ameliabarty/st…

@AmeliaBarty @xqcdp @arpansplaining how you’re carrying on is almost personal in nature I’ve met the guy, he’s endearing and jolly, very upbeat personality that draws people You may need to learn, like-ability is underrated as a skill in professional settings. It sure beats being a sour hater

what i’m criticizing here are the closed Silicon Valley patronage networks that make this kind of role possible in the first place schmoozing with the tech elite in order to sell private investments is as fake as job as any pencil pusher at the DMV, we just don’t think of it that way because it’s cloaked in an aura of sophistication and thank god the public hasn’t found out yet, because if they truly understood what’s happening, there would be riots

I know Suds personally, he’s actually a pretty humble and no frills guy. He was a founder previously and grinded it out for years. Dropping this stuff publicly is important for both deal flow and LP mindshare. Some people do podcasts and market maps, he does this. It’s simply one strategy for personal marketing. I hate the startup-LARPing we’re seeing these days but I don’t think Suds deserves that label. I invested in his fund as a tiny LP; I wouldn’t have done it if I thought he was style without substance.

@AmeliaBarty @ctjlewis reducing suffering of one generation isn't strong enough justification to condemn all future generations to being obsolete & unimportant

No this is stupid. People have been dying literally forever. But this is the first time we have ever faced a future without purpose or utility for our species. I’d take dying like my ancestors and having a fulfilling life every single time. Mortality is a part of life. And so is purpose. Humans cant live without purpose. It’s integral to our existence and happiness. I deal with cancer patients all the time. You know what consistently makes people happy? Being able to contribute meaningfully. Do you know what really got to my dad when he was dying of cancer? He was basically bedbound and couldn’t contribute to the household… He thought he was a burden. The thought of him having those feelings makes sadder than him actually dying.

I don’t know this guy, so I’m going solely based on what he posts. But there’s a whole cohort of young investors whose primary value add is about access to SV networks and playing next round markup game. Was similar wave in ZIRP era. Always interesting to see which ones make it.

@nkreu113r this is basically the AI doomer hypothesis, and i think it’s wildly wrong. we will find a way to adapt without most humans being sufficiently productive this is the reality we live with today anyway. most humans are not that economically useful

@AmeliaBarty Don’t think you’re wrong per se but it’s just different kinds of suffering. And the underclass thing is more permanent and systemic. And probably the underclass people will be killed off anyway.

@AmeliaBarty @catboosted Cope and seethe he’s 100% not nepo lmao Took him a long time to raise pure hustle and fake it till you make it. Want more humility? Sure, but posting about your access begets more access this is how the venture game works. Your jealousy is retarded and unbecoming.
