I do prefer the music in the third game, though; not only is it mightily atmospheric, it's also neatly varied, changing (with no loading pauses) as you progress through each level to accentuate the on-screen action.

@exQUIZitely Where many Amiga games forced players to choose between music *or* sound effects, here came this gloriously frantic blast-a-thon with superbly atmospheric FX, ultra-classy voice samples AND a reactive pulse-pounding techno soundtrack all at once. The Bitmaps' finest hour!

@Amiga_Square I was going to say - adaptive music for that era, mindblowing! And also part of why that game did so well, I believe.

The Bitmap Brothers, founded in 1987 by Mike Montgomery, Eric Matthews, and Steve Kelly in London's Wapping. They had their own distinctive style, known for excellent pixel art, great soundtracks, and tough gameplay. Their first two games were Xenon (1988) and Speedball (1988). Later titles became absolute icons of gaming history like... Xenon 2: Megablast (1989) Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe (1990) Gods (1991) The Chaos Engine (1993) Z (1996) .all earning critical acclaim. If you had to pick just one game that best defined their style and represented their legacy, which would it be?

@exQUIZitely Richard Joseph, the chap who arranged all the music and sound effects for the game, was a true audio wizard. The reactive soundtrack for The Chaos Engine, which changes seamlessly depending on which part of the level you're in, was revolutionary at the time.

It's imperative to get into the secret room at the end of every island and thus gather all the permanent power-ups (they're *hugely* useful), but repeatedly collecting the gems in the right order is no mean feat!

Just an utter joy to play from start to finish, and it was available on budget via The Hit Squad for *ages*. Eight quid for an arcade game in your own home is a barg by any standards.

Some of its levels tend towards the sprawling and empty, but by *heck* there are a lot of them, and there are tons of clever little tricks and surprises to discover along the way.

I was young in the 80s/90s in the UK. I don’t remember my parents ever going out to eat, except when we were on holiday (in the UK). I don’t think they ever took me to a fast food restaurant, or ordered takeaway food. People today have no clue how working people lived. /1
