Less regulation less oversight more risk to communities. These incidents are why rollbacks of EPA policies by DJT are dangerous to everyone! Corporations push for fewer regulations because compliance costs money/profits. Unaware if this specific incident is caused by rollbacks‼️

Louisiana has decided to cede the entire parole decision-making process to an algorithm that will decide if you die in prison or not. There will be no human input or nuance allowed. Even our parole board is sickened by this. LINK: veritenews.org/2025/04/10/tig…

Russia, with its missile attacks, destroyed last night the unique National Chornobyl Museum in Kyiv’s Podil… look at the precious heritage of our history the Kremlin is waging war against, because fighting the Ukrainian army is proving far more difficult for it. The museum housed more than 22,000 exhibits related to the 1986 nuclear disaster.

NYT out with a jaw dropping investigative report on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. 60 Minutes reported last Sunday on some of this, too. The NYT report is a must-read, the 60 Minutes report should then be watched. 1/3

Those were the options: “a leaking tank or a tank that blows up. This is going to happen unless some guy behind me here figures out how we can mitigate this incident. This thing is going to fail. We don’t know when.”

🦔This one happened yesterday but is still worth flagging. Starbucks killed its AI-powered inventory counting tool after nine months in North American stores. The system used LiDAR sensors and cameras to count syrups and milks, routinely confused similar products, and missed items entirely. A Starbucks promotional video from the launch literally captured the malfunction, with the system scanning around a peppermint syrup bottle on the shelf without registering it. Stores are returning to manual counting. My Take I love that the failure mode showed up in the promotional video meant to advertise the product. Starbucks did not pilot this in 50 stores and measure error rates against manual counting before deploying it. The company pushed it across the entire North American network because the CEO wanted to show technology leadership, and the syrup bottle the system could not see was right there in the launch materials. Pizza Hut Dragontail, Glendale Community College, and now Starbucks all ran the same script. AI sales pitches demo well in controlled environments and break down in actual operations. CEOs sign these contracts because the alternative looks like falling behind, and the costs of the failure land on the franchisees, store employees, and customers. The vendors get paid for nine months of being someone else's QA team. Nobody in the chain of executives signing these contracts is the one absorbing the cost, and until that incentive flips, the rollouts continue. Hedgie🤗

I'm urging California Governor Gavin Newsom to submit a request to President Trump for a federal disaster declaration in preparation for a potential catastrophic incident at the GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove, California, known as the "Western Incident." A federal disaster declaration would activate the full capacity of the federal government’s support, including assets from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). I'm continuing to work with local, state, and federal authorities to ensure that residents are safe and that every solution is exhausted to mitigate the risk of a chemical leak or explosion.

We had a saying for HazMat incidents like this when I worked, Methyl Ethyl Bad Shit! The chemical involved is Methyl Methacrylate (MMA). Here's more info that includes the mandatory evacuation zones. It's in Garden Grove & bordering Stanton, Orange County, CA. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a clear, colorless industrial liquid monomer used primarily to produce acrylic plastics and resins. Because it has exothermic properties, it creates its own heat. If it gets too hot, it can undergo a process called violent auto-polymerization, which creates extreme pressure and a severe risk of an explosion. Key Risks of MMA Vapors: - Severe Inhalation Hazard: Breathing in the concentrated vapors causes intense irritation to the nose, throat, and lungs. High concentrations can lead to pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs) and can be fatal. - High Flammability: The vapors are highly volatile and catch fire easily. If an ignition source hits the vapor cloud, it can trigger a massive flash fire. - Extreme Chemical Odor: It carries an incredibly sharp, pungent, fruity odor. This odor travels fast with the wind, which is why people miles away from the Garden Grove site are reporting a strong plastic smell. The Safe Bounding Box For Today's Evacuation: - If you are anywhere inside these four streets, you are ordered to leave immediately: - North Boundary: Orangewood Avenue - South Boundary: Garden Grove Boulevard - East Boundary: Dale Street - West Boundary: Springdale Avenue

Karen Hao on why "empire" is the right framework for understanding AI companies: Karen Hao argues that the AI industry can only be properly understood through one specific lens. "Empire is the only metaphor that I've ever found to fully encapsulate all of the dimensions of what these companies do and the scale that they operate and what motivates them to do what they do." She draws direct parallels between what she calls "the empires of AI" and the empires of old, identifying three specific patterns. First, resource extraction. "They lay claim to resources that are not their own in the pursuit of training these models. That's the data of individuals, the intellectual property of artists, writers, and creators." She adds that this land-grabbing extends to physical infrastructure, with companies seizing resources to build the supercomputer facilities needed to train next-generation models. Second, labor exploitation. "They contract hundreds of thousands of workers all around the world, including in the US, to ultimately make these technologies." But the labor dimension goes deeper than just contracting workers. Hao explains that the technology itself is designed with a specific intent: "They also design their tools to be labor automating so that when the technologies are deployed, it also affects labor rights because it erodes away labor rights. And this is a political choice that they have." Third, knowledge monopolisation. "They monopolize knowledge production. So they project this idea that they're the only ones that really understand how the technology works. And so if the public doesn't like it, it's because they don't actually know enough about this technology." According to @_KarenHao, this monopolisation operates on multiple fronts directed at the public, at policymakers, and through the research community itself: "They've also captured the majority of the scientists that are working on understanding the limitations and capabilities of AI." Hao's framework suggests that when we evaluate AI companies, we shouldn't just look at their products or their stated missions. We should ask the same questions historians ask of empires whose resources are being claimed, whose labor is being exploited, and who controls the narrative about what's really happening. If she's right, the most important debates about AI aren't technical ones. They're political.

#BREAKING: Laurie Garrett: “Can I add one very important set of data points? In 2024, our USAID commitment to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was more than a BILLION dollars. Last year, brace yourself, $67 million. Nearly every single hospital, clinic, pharmacy in all of DRC was wholly or partially dependent on USAID & HHS support to maintain supplies and to deliver what people needed, and that’s GONE. Pharmacies are empty, stores are empty, the clinics are gone…so even if you didn’t have #Ebola, according to humanitarian organizations…300,000 MORE people have DIED in the DRC since USAID was cut, 300,000.”😢

The moment of one of today’s Russian strikes on Kyiv. I can see that fewer and fewer people are reading news from Ukraine. I understand that on a Sunday morning, people don’t want to read about war. They want to sleep a little longer, drink good coffee, and sit in the sun. I understand that. The algorithms on X limit content about war, destruction, and suffering. You have to make an effort to even see this information. All of this is understandable on a human level. But unfortunately, if you remove Putin and the war from your information feed, they do not disappear from reality. Putin is a sadist and a maniac. He is a threat to all of humanity. There needs to be active resistance. News from Ukraine needs to be shared. People need to keep their focus. Despite a sleepless night, I’m still here. And I’m grateful to everyone who continues to stand with us. One day, we’ll drink morning coffee together in a beautiful, peaceful Kyiv.
