To be fair having LGBT things does NOT automatically mean a decline in viewers or interest. If it did why did Will and Grace run for years, why is Queen Greatest Hits the best selling album of all time in the UK, why was Xena a huge hit? These were all popular when I was a boy and homophobia was rife. (Even I viewed being called gay as a terrible insult.) Why then are they a death sentence to something's popularity in an age when we all probably know dozens of out and proud people? Simple, it's HOW they are integrated like everything else. Don't do the following things with your LGBT or your women or minority characters and it's fine. (Obviously yes don't do this with your straight male characters either LOL, but nobody does so I don't need to say so.) 1/ Don't use LGBT people or women or minorities to automatically hate on and insult men. 2/ Write them as fully rounded people. That doesn't mean never mention their sexuality. Obviously yes do so, but do it in a normal way and not where the show comes to a halt so the writer can let you know how AMAZING they are for having an LGBT or a minority character. 3/ Create new characters and art for them. Don't lazily hijack existing ones and change them as people don't like their favourites being changed in big ways regardless. Also sometimes it doesn't fit. IE how is James Bond going to seem like the same character and be gay. 4/ Don't assume a woman or a minority character has to be political. If it's appropriate for the story, IE if you're doing something about homophobia in the 60s, by all means, but if its a story about people fighting monsters, then yeah don't as it jars and seems awkward and ill fitting. 5/ Don't stereotype them in an effort to pander to them which just offends everybody. Sadly however things like Star Trek and Doctor Who have been doing this for 10 years despite being warned and it's got to the point where audiences have developed a Pavlovian response to view ANY female or LGBT or minority thing as being like this and so people have turned against them in general, which is a damn shame.
