Just remember, folks: When the lefties, liberals and ex-Tories savage pensioners for daring to expect a state pension after a lifetime of hard graft, scrimping, saving and investing so they can finally enjoy a few comfortable years ,tell them this: National Insurance was created to fund pensions. Full stop. Yet the government now rakes in £172 billion+ a year in NI contributions (rising to £205 billion in 2025/26 after the employer rate hike) while state pension spending sits at roughly £125–135 billion. If it had stayed properly ring-fenced as the original social contract promised, pensions would more than pay for themselves. Instead, successive governments shovelled the cash into general taxation and blew it elsewhere. Then they wonder why the books don’t balance. They’ve piled on unaffordable new benefits for the unemployed and working-age population ,Universal Credit expansions, sky-rocketing disability and carer claims, and a host of other vote-grabbing giveaways. The result? The welfare bill balloons while the very people who paid in all their lives are now told their pension should be means-tested. Why work? Why save? Why invest? Why go without today for a secure tomorrow when the state turns round and demonises the thrifty pensioners who actually did exactly that? This isn’t compassion. It’s a straight-up betrayal of the deal every working generation was sold. Pensioners aren’t a burden ,they’re the ones who built the system. Time to honour the promise.

Another huge blow to Miliband’s green dreams as energy and subsidies giant Drax ditches its bioenergy with carbon capture and storage plans.
