@2147mill What does it mean to “miss the best 5 days”? Do you mean not investing when the market it at its lowest?

The best investors I know aren't the smartest. They're the most patient. They buy index funds, reinvest dividends, ignore the noise, and check their accounts twice a year. Boring wins.

@AndyMpolitics @joncstone @botzarelli the square mile does actually seem like that to me - steeped in complicated and unique history and myths - it is a realm (or "local authority") that is governed differently to the rest of the country

@joncstone @botzarelli as well as improving the realm to make the area more pleasant for workers and visitors hosting meetings outside their office, there are plenty of interesting places for tourists - it is the square mile after all - like the bank of england museum, monument, loads of churches etc

I asked @RoryStewartUK about the prevalence of anti-Muslim bigotry in modern politics and his reply stunned me. What I wanted to talk about was the way ignorance and hatred (recent examples: describing Muslims praying in public as “an act of domination”, political parties trying to ban the burqa) was now not just harming British Muslims, but also the national interest. How a lack of understanding about martyrdom or Persian nationalism connects to a war that might cause a global depression. I thought he might talk about Karbala, and we did eventually, but he began with a precise and confronting statement: much of what we’re dealing with is, quite simply, racism. And not only that, but the weaponisation of that racism, and its political uses, which he described as “profoundly disturbing.” He talked about arguing with Tommy Robinson. Speculated about possible endpoints for a politics that don’t incorporate dignity and love. And drew a parallel to anti-Semitism in the 1930s. If you haven’t listened to the latest episode of The Exchange yet, you really need to. Listen in bio.

The UK tax year resets on 6th April. Your £20,000 ISA allowance? Gone. You can’t roll it over. You can’t claim it back. It disappears forever. £20,000 of tax free investing opportunity. Vanished. Every single year people don’t use it. Using yours?

@logan53025545 @2147mill It depends on when you’ll need to access the funds and what your goals are. If you won’t need to access the funds for 5+ years, an ISA is a good choice, pick a handful of long term growth stocks and leave them for many years to double/treble in value

WHAT THE CIA'S "QUEEN OF TORTURE" DID NEXT, by @fayecurran99 Alfreda Bikowsky led the CIA unit that tortured suspected terrorists and caught Osama bin Laden. She helped design, defend and implement the agency’s torture program during the war on terror. She is said to have “gleefully” tortured detainees at remote prisons across the Middle East. Now she’s a women’s life coach. In her first long-form interview since she retired from the CIA in 2021, Bikowsky stands by the use of waterboarding as a form of interrogation. She has never been waterboarded. She never considered trying it. When asked about the waterboarding of KSM, and the subject of what constitutes torture, Bikowsky repeats the same line: “In all instances, the agency has never asked me to do anything that I thought was unethical or unlawful or immoral.” She has no regrets. In her coaching she encourages her clients to remember that “someone could look at Jesus Christ walking on water and come away criticising him because he wasn’t juggling at the same time”. Faye Curran spent several months talking to – and being life-coached by – the “Queen of Torture”. Read the full story below.

Fascinating. When they do these 4 person shows, BBCQT has one person from the right beyond parties, but not from the left. Same happened when they had no Greens the week before the Greens won a by-election. Entirely unserious program.

British history seems to consist in large part of us making the world objectively better for everybody, getting no credit for it, and then once our empire was exhausted the same people we helped cynically lying about our history in order to get money from us.
Robbie@Robbie_Reasons

As Ghana calls for reparations and the left wing media rush to reinforce the white guilt some may feel, it is notable that none use this photo of a British Sailor removing the chains from a freed slave. Great Britain ended the slave trade and paid in blood and coin. No charge.

The average UK mortgage is £200,000 at 5% over 25 years. Total repayment? £350,000. You borrow £200K and pay back £350K. £150,000 straight to the bank. For nothing. Then you pay to fix up the house. Stuff breaks. You pay insurance monthly. Fees when/if you sell the property. And we act like renting is throwing money away. There is a strong argument for renting.
