We had an exmo in church today. He got up to bear his testimony about how he left the church 7 years and did so very angrily. But its okay, because hes not angry anymore, and he has found God in another church. So parents with wayward kids, dont persure them too hard, dont push them too hard, they might find God somewhere else. He closed in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. And the whole ward said "amen". I just can't

A persons faith is super personal. I think it's really hard to talk to others about faith transitions or crisis because, unless one has gone through it, it's hard to relate to. I spoke to my spouse and my church leaders. I spoke to my inactive children. Polar opposite viewpoints, so those conversations did not help me. Thankfully I had some open minded friends and was able to sort through things on my own. But it's still a work in progress. I have three children, all inactive. They are on their own journey. I love them and love that they feel confident in finding their own path.

There is a real conversation to be had with Strong’s new data about people leaving and how members and families with them.

Unconditional love is so important. Of course boundaries need to be set if there is harmful behavior, but if a child chooses a different path whether it be college, career, or religion, they should still be loved. I'm sorry for both of your situations. I pray that your son will return to you, and PIMO, I pray that you have healed from those painful moments in your life.

@pimomormon I'm so sorry you weren't told this. That breaks my heart. I've told my children, especially this child, how much I love him. I've told him many times nothing he could ever do would make me stop loving him. His mind has been twisted so much. My DMs are open if you want to talk.🫶🏼

A suggestion to those seeing this post: tell your kids you’ll love them no matter what, and show them. Be a safe space for your kids. I didn’t hear these things as a kid. I’m not saying I know anything in this situation. I’m speaking from my experience alone.

@KelseaJ112 Sometimes furniture looks awful but if it's sturdy you can always strip it and repaint it. Ive done that with so many pieces of furniture over the years.

How do people find good furniture through thrifting? I have never found anything that was even halfway decent.

@synthenergy One of the things I think we need to normalize and do much better at is the worry and sadness we experience when somebody chooses a different path. It's not generally permanent, it's what they feel like they need, and God doesn't give up on us. Things work out someday later.

This was my worst nightmare, to imagine my eternal family of 5 breaking up. It happened in my parents when my brother left the church. My soul aches for the existential dread of those who feel they have eternally failed I have a quieter, uncertain belief now…

@synthenergy I agree. All of my children are no longer interested in the church. But that is their path to take, not mine. I will always love them. Full stop.

… But, IMO, a loving God wouldn't want to punish finite "crimes" w eternal damnation & family separation. We don't know what happens after we die. We can hope. But this life is to have our families strong w/ joy. Never let religion be a wedge between loving family members.
