In March of this year, His Grace the Most Reverend Shane Janzen, Primate of the Traditional Anglican Church, and I enjoyed the first two opening games of the new season for the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre. Tonight, the Jays won the first game of the World Series against Los Angeles 11-4 at the same venue. Talk about Anglo-Catholic mojo! O Canada!

Why do students learn so much about the Egyptian pyramids and almost nothing about the great cathedrals that took far longer to build and were infinitely more complex? This one took more than 600 years to build.

@jessenigro I hoped to provide specifics to pick between four 800-page hymnals that will be used for decades. The two parts (plus the prequel from July 2024) might be daunting if you are not a nerd, since they total 18,000 words. Here's an overview of where to start: anglicanmusic.blogspot.com/2025/08/lesson…

This review, in two parts, is an invaluable study and comparison of the classic Anglican hymnals of the 20th century. If you’re a nerd for church music do yourself a favor and check it out.

"If an ACNA parish is looking to replace an existing hymnal — and not every church should be looking to change — Sing Unto the Lord is the best replacement for Hymnal 1982..." @AnglicanM Joel West northamanglican.com/book-review-si…

@RedKnight69_ @NorthAmAnglican Joel W. West The REC & other traditional worship parishes are the ones who use hymnals. ACNA praise band parishes (led by a pastor who grew up in a Baptist or nondenom church) not only don't use hymnals, but may not even know (let alone care) about 160+ years of Anglican hymnody.

@NorthAmAnglican Sing Unto the Lord is intended for Hymnal 1982 parishes. In terms of ethos, it's somewhere between 1980s TEC and 2020s ACNA. If I were at a contemporary worship ACNA parish (I'm not), I'd consider both. If the parish uses both Rite I & II (or 2019/2022), I'd compare MTL and SUtL.

@NorthAmAnglican You should read the two parts of the review. But for a lot of reasons, if you want an update to Hymnal (1940) then (like a few dozen BCP 1928 parishes) you will prefer Magnify the Lord, which has similar goals and ethos.

ALMIGHTY God, who gavest strength to thy servant, John Mason Neale, to serve thee and thy Church in manifold ways through many years of contradiction and adversity: give unto us such courage and fortitude, that we also may endure the Cross: and, despising the shame for the joy that is set before us, may bring forth abundantly the fruit of good works. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
