If there wasn't a double standard in Hollywood right now they'd have no standards at all. We're told stories like Moana off limits to cultural tampering while western myths like The Odyssey are just fiction and representation shouldn't matter it all. "It's just a myth chuds." "It never happened." "The myth is so universal you can cast whoever you want it doesn't change the story." Moana never existed so why does representation matter? Maui is a folk hero therefore he could be any color. The island of Motunui is entirely made up so why not shoot it off the coast of Croatia? The same people who foam at the mouth about legitimate concerns with The Odyssey's casting will either ignore this double standard or praise it. The double standard is that Hollywood treating non-Western folklore with a hyperfixated reverence for cultural accuracy, while treating Western classical text like an open-source sandbox anyone can play in. History and regional identity can be entirely erased because "it's fiction, chud." As long as it's a western myth it can be bent, pillaged, subverted, and sacrificed for the sake of progressive inclusivity. You don't get to argue that lineage is sacred for one culture's myths and completely irrelevant for another's just because it fits a corporate marketing narrative and makes you feel like a good person.

I almost feel sorry for the people desperately praying for The Odyssey to flop. The internet trashed Christopher Nolan's casting choices before. They mocked Heath Ledger as the Joker. They questioned Tom Hardy as Bane because of the mask. They laughed at casting relatively unknown actors in Dunkirk. Every single time, Nolan proved them wrong. Now they're convinced The Odyssey will fail over casting. History isn't on your side. Hate all you want, The Odyssey is on its way to sweeping the box office and making its critics look foolish yet again.

Mi humilde opinión: las reseñas entusiastas no se filtraron, las filtraron para hacer control de daños; y las crearon por lo mismo. La gente no solo se enojó por la elección del cast "diverse": los vestuarios están mal, no contrataron ni un solo griego (aunque fueron a filmar allá), van a meter a un rapero por la cara. Nolan tomó el nombre de la historia pero le quitó todo lo griego. Luego son estos los que te hablan de apropiación cultural.

The Odyssey will not be the biggest movie of the year. The dislike ratio on The Odyssey is now 90%, and not even had 7 million trailer views in 10 days. It's falling behind other movies such as Dune Part 3 and Avatar Aang... both of which are sporting much healthier like ratios with a higher number of views in a shorter amount of time. It is still sitting on trending because people are hate-watching the trailer, ratioing it into oblivion. Unless the movie is a complete SURPRISE where it is far better than the trailer looks, the movie is completely cooked. What's a worse signal is that now Christopher Nolan and the other major actors are doing rounds in the press, trying to do damage control and defend the movie, while invoking the "modern audience". If they were confident that the movie would succeed, they wouldn't be doing that.
