In 1948, he became finance minister and presented two union budgets. But he stood by his principles. The nation saw his resignation in protest against the growing powers of the Planning Commission. Later, he chaired the State Bank of India and served as vice chancellor of the University of Mumbai and the University of Kerala. He was also a noted writer, with works including Village Government in British India. In 1959, Mr. Matthai was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his contribution to the country.
