The word “democracy” doesn’t appear once in the Constitution. Not once. Madison, Jefferson, and Adams didn’t just avoid the word — they condemned pure democracy. The Pledge of Allegiance says “the Republic.” The Civil War’s anthem was the Battle Hymn of the Republic. The Founders studied history. They knew unchecked majority rule was mob tyranny. So they built something different. The Electoral College. The presidential veto. A two-thirds threshold to override it. A Constitution explicitly designed to be anti-majoritarian. The rules exist to protect you from 51% of your neighbors deciding your rights don’t matter today. How many Americans know that’s what they’re actually living under?

John Thune has destroyed every single Senate norm that he claimed to cherish. He set a far bigger and more dangerous precedent than abolishing the filibuster.

Here’s where we stand. The Good: President Trump is paying TSA agents, and the current bill the Senate just sent over to the House re-opens DHS. ICE and Border Patrol will continue arrests and deportations, being primarily funded through the OBBB. Democrats did not succeed in sabotaging border and immigration enforcement in any substantive way. The Bad: the Senate goes on a two week recess without passing the SAVE America Act, stand-alone voter ID, or funding all of DHS through the normal process. Democrats threw a wrench into our efforts to deliver on issues which enjoy broad support among the American people. The Ugly: Congress, especially the Senate, cannot skate by relying on President Trump to solve all our problems. Republicans have to justify their majorities by fighting for permanent policy victories, not can-kicking with unrealistic reconciliation promises. If we do not stand and fight today, we will not inspire Americans in November.

The question you should answer: Why did this deal have to happen at 3 AM? Why couldn't it happen at 3 PM, with cameras rolling and every senator on record? You know why. Let’s summarize where we are after a 40+ day Democrat shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security. 1) ICE and CBP are funded, thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts and the foresight of President Trump and Republicans in Congress. 2) After holding DHS and the American people hostage for over 40 days, Dems got ZERO restrictions that would prevent ICE and CBP agents from doing their jobs safely. 3) Due to Dem obstruction of the appropriations process, ICE and CBP will get even more funding through budget reconciliation. 4) Dems have once again established themselves as the “Open Borders, Defund the Police” party heading into an election. 5) Dem leadership has proven once again they can’t be trusted to make a deal. Which begs the question if you’re a Dem senator or one of their left-wing supporters: What was this really all about?
