Muslim Traders Along Arakan-Bangladesh Border Allegedly Facing Kidnappings and Extortion by Armed Muslim Groups AB News – May 5, 2026 Muslim traders involved in cross-border trade activities along the border between Rakhine State and Bangladesh are reportedly being threatened, kidnapped, and extorted by armed Muslim groups including RSO, ARSA, and ARA, according to Bangladesh-based sources. Sources said ARSA armed members have allegedly been extorting money from Muslim traders operating in the Palongkhali border area of Ukhiya Township in Bangladesh. Local residents also reported that armed activities by ARSA members have recently increased in the Balukhali and Palongkhali areas, where additional manpower has allegedly been deployed. According to the sources, movements by these armed groups have also been observed near camps operated by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). No official statements regarding the allegations have yet been released by relevant authorities. However, local residents said the security situation along the border region remains tense.

Sheikh Burahan, the spokesperson for the militant group ARSA, released a video via the "ARSA Spokesperson" Telegram channel on May 2, claiming that the group is receiving backing from the Bangladeshi government. In the video, Sheikh Burahan stated, "The Bangladeshi government is now supporting us from behind." Arakkha Public Health Department Providing Free Eye Surgeries for Displaced Civilians Narinjara – May 2, 2026 The Arakkha Public Health Department under the Arakkha People’s Revolutionary Government has reportedly been providing free eye surgeries for internally displaced civilians suffering from eye diseases in an area within Arakkha region. According to an official from the health department, nearly 200 displaced patients with eye-related illnesses were initially examined using specialized eye-testing equipment, and 27 patients subsequently received free eye surgeries during the first week of April. A displaced civilian who underwent successful eye surgery told Narinjara that all expenses were fully covered by the Arakkha People’s Revolutionary Government. “The Arakkha Public Health Department arranged free transportation for us to the surgery site. After arriving, they provided accommodation and took care of all our daily needs. During the treatment process, they covered everything, including medical expenses and travel costs, so we did not have to spend a single kyat,” the patient said. The patient also expressed gratitude toward the government for taking responsibility for the surgeries and related assistance during a difficult wartime period. “At a time when civilians are struggling to survive amid war and hardship, receiving eye treatment was something completely impossible for people like us. The government took responsibility for something we could never afford ourselves, and we are deeply grateful,” he added. Officials from the Arakkha Public Health Department said they plan to continue carrying out eye surgeries for displaced people and other vulnerable Arakkha residents by personally contributing financial resources and working together with eye specialists. In addition to free eye surgeries, the department is also continuing to provide vaccination programs, maternal and child healthcare services, disease prevention and control programs, basic medical treatment, and treatment for general illnesses across the region. Previously, the Arakkha Public Health Department mainly provided free treatment services at centralized meeting points coordinated through local administrative departments for poor residents and displaced civilians. However, the department has now reportedly expanded its services through a mobile healthcare system to reach more communities directly.
