Pretty much yes. Romania does have a 10% flat income tax. Employees also pay 25% in pension contributions and 10% health insurance. That's why their take-home pay on a €100k salary is nowhere near €90k. Having a low flat income tax rate and a significantly lower net salary can both be true at the same time.

The Russian drone crash into apartments in Galați was a blatant and serious violation of Romania’s sovereignty and European airspace. I spoke with Foreign Minister @oana_toiu this morning to convey the EU’s full solidarity with Romania. Russia has long ago stopped respecting borders. Moscow cannot be allowed to breach European airspace with impunity. EU Foreign Ministers yesterday vowed to ramp up pressure on Russia, increase support for Ukraine, and invest in Europe’s own defence readiness.

Romania can't go to war with Russia. Nobody sane is asking for that. What is the common sense action that all countries neighboring Ukraine should have taken since 24 February, 2022 is to cover air defense in western and southern Ukraine along the border so the Ukrainians didn't have to waste resources to defend us too. That could have been done without fighting the Russians directly. Romanians hit by Russian drones are in the hospital tonight because Romanian leadership and our allies were weak and indecisive.

After the drone attack in Romania, it’s not enough to warn Russia about the escalation it is actually seeking. To prevent this “common practice,” strong European and especially US sanctions are needed, such as those proposed by Senators Graham and Blumenthal more than a year ago.
