I fully agree about centering the action and not the person. I applaud the action he took and hope that he grows from here (not a good sign that he’s being interviewed by Carlson today). What I mean about accuracy is that I think it’s important that we name Israeli belligerence & the large influence Israel and such groups as AIPAC have on US foreign policy while not letting US militarism and US imperialism off the hook and having the effect of furthering the mainstreaming of antisemitic conspiracy theories which harm Jews and all people.

I just wrote this yesterday, I don’t assign responsibility to Israel but to the US Empire. But it’s inaccurate to say these are anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, as criticism of Israel is not criticism of Judaism, and that the role of Israel in shaping US Iraq, Syrian and overall Middle Eastern policy is a conspiracy theory when it is widely well understood and documented. I didn’t know Kent before yesterday, I don’t like what I know of him, but the rush to center him personally, rather than his criticism and protest, is a well used tactic of the government and its supporters, especially in the media. open.substack.com/pub/matthewhoh…

In 2009, when I resigned over the escalation of the Afghan War and received tremendous media attention, it took a week or two for the smear campaign against me to begin. Ultimately, General Petraeus and Central Command hired a strategic communications firm to discredit and denigrate me. Today, the “important background” about Kent came in less than an hour following reports of his resignation. American media has changed so greatly in those 17 years, not simply with the introduction and adoption of smart phones and social media, but with the near total compliance of traditional, legacy and corporate media with the American national security establishment. Yes, a mutually beneficial relationship existed two decades ago between the national security establishment and the corporate media, but not to the degree it exists today. I hope Joe Kent gets front page coverage on the Washington Post and is interviewed on the Today Show as I was, but I suspect corporate media will quickly ignore him or offer the Administration’s smears with as much weight as his protest and criticism.

In this moment inside the US where such figures as Fuentes and Candace Owens are mainstream, I believe that it’s essential that we be nuanced, principled, and accurate in our political support and peacemaking. As AJ Muste taught, the means are as important as the ends we want to achieve.

As I discussed on @KnowYrEnemyPod recently, however, there is a tightly networked faction of US and Israeli hawks who share a particular vision of US-Israeli regional military hegemony. This faction was not in power in Israel in 2003, they are now.

Joe Kent is right about Israel pushing the US into the Iran war and wrong about Israel pushing the US into the Iraq war.

It is strange how the world can cooperate to get oil through the Iranian blockade at the Strait of Hormuz but still aren't able to get food through the Israeli blockade at the borders of Gaza.

After Trump’s 2016 win, many Americans were stunned because they didn’t know anyone who voted for him. Political polarization had created totally separate social realities. Iran today is even more polarized. Some Iranians—especially, though not only, abroad—support this war, believing it will quickly lead to something better.
