Boomers seem to forget that fast food used to be a normal, everyday expense for them because it was affordable. You could get a burger easily on minimum wage, it wasn’t some fancy treat you had once a year as a reward for pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.

Minimum wage in the UK should be £19.65 an hour and Freddos prove it. In 2005, minimum wage was £5.05 and a Freddo was 10p, meaning an hour’s work bought 50 Freddos. In 2026, minimum wage is £12.71 but a Freddo costs 39p, so an hour’s work now only buys 32. Pay has risen 152%, but Freddos are up 290%. If wages kept up with Freddos, minimum wage would be around £19.65 an hour.

This is just daft. Labour's affiliated unions were deeply involved in developing our manifesto. There are areas of tension such as energy policy and speed of defence spending (on both I'm sympathetic to the GMB & Unite position) but overall this is one of the most pro-union govts ever - from the Employment Rights Act to resolving disputes in the NHS and rail to miners' pensions.

Young people aren’t lazy and we don’t “just not want it enough.” We’re struggling because the cost of living and buying a home has skyrocketed. Previous generations could often rely on one full time income, with a partner working part time or staying home, and still afford a house and raise a family. Today, many of us with a partner are working two full time jobs, doing overtime, and running side hustles and we still can barely afford the same standard of living they had. It’s not a lack of work ethic or being lazy. It’s a completely different economic reality. But yeah, tell us again how easy we have it.
