The Rape Gang Inquiry probably isn’t all that surprising to those of us who’ve been paying attention — at least, we knew that mass migration was leading to higher rates of rape in the UK. What sets this report apart though, is what fills roughly 80 pages in the center of the report: survivor testimony, in their own words. Because British authorities chose to revictimize the estimated 250,000 girls who were abused by the grooming gangs, we are going to center some of their stories. Michelle was 14 when she was first gang-raped by a group of Muslim men. She was taken to police who told her that despite her injuries, there was not enough evidence to pursue charges. One of the gang members later forced her back to the police station to recant her allegation. Police treated him as her “appropriate adult” — ”a role normally reserved for a parent, close family member, social worker, or trained professional.” Michelle’s friend lived in a care home. When care workers called police about the abuse, the girls were dismissed as prostitutes. She described her abusers as “98% of them were Pakistani Muslim. If not, they were Iraqi Muslim or Kurdish” and said the people who were supposed to protect her “didn’t want to open that can of worms, because it’s a religion thing.” The Rape Gang Inquiry is filled with firsthand accounts like this.
