People under 40 have a gambling and credit problem… “Following legalization, delinquency rose steadily in legal counties and surpassed half a percentage point three years after legalization, representing a noticeable deterioration in repayment performance from a baseline of 10.7 percent. Prediction markets have effectively legalized sports gambling in all 50 states AND lowered the age to 18. Even if you like the concept of prediction markets, you can probably agree that giving every 18-year old in the country a casino in their pocket is not a great idea.

Interesting to see this #sportsbetting “monthly P+L” pass through NY’s Assembly. One potential concern, though, is early evidence from #UK suggested this could actually *increase* betting behavior: “oh, I didn’t lose as much as I thought!” Area for further testing and research.

Washington just joined a diverse group of states CA, OK, MN, & ND in banning employee non-competes. Research shows they function as "restraints of trade in labor and product markets, suppressing wages, mobility, entrepreneurship, and innovation while raising costs to consumers."

This bill makes unlawful something that is already illegal. The problem is the CFTC isn't enforcing the prohibition that already exists in Rule 180.1. Senator Murphy should be asking why the CFTC isn't enforcing the law.

NEW: Senator Chris Murphy is introducing new prediction market legislation today. Preliminary press release: U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and U.S. Representative Greg Casar (D-Texas-35) on Tuesday, March 17 at 10:30am will hold a press conference to introduce the Banning Event Trading on Sensitive Operations and Federal Functions (BETS OFF) Act, bicameral legislation to ban wagering on government actions, terrorism, war, assassination, and events where an individual knows or controls the outcome. Responding to alarming reports that prediction market accounts – likely owned by government insiders – placed large bets in the hours leading up to both the Venezuela operation and the initial Iran strikes, Murphy and Casar’s BETS OFF Act would put a stop to these corrupt wagers, crack down on prediction markets that flout the law with offshore platforms, and reject the idea that we should commodify every part of our lives.
