No one lives without presupposing that there is a correct way to do things whether or not they think it's from them or inherent in reality. Given that God is goodness itself, you must operate believing it to exist whether you call it God or not. The only difference is that for atheists, goodness comes from reason and not from the potential goodness in reality itself. This mentality has lead to totalitarian regimes such as the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and Maoist China, who each believed that with enough reason they could order reality to fit their world view. They killed hundreds of millions instead because reality cannot be bent. The only correct path is to admit that reason is a way of finding goodness, and not goodness in of itself lest you make the exact same mistake as they did. This is why Christianity birthed science, people found that reason was a way of finding goodness, but we stupidly thought that the ancients, despite laying the groundwork for our logic, were superstitious idiots instead of people describing something real in the only way they could.
