Lots of early-stage companies get stuck between servicing mass-market SMBs and larger Enterprise customers, and it causes them a lot of pain. If you can sign Enterprise customers, there's a bunch of stuff you don't really ever need to automate. Onboarding and customer service can be super high-touch and manual because you're earning so much from each customer. But if you have any volume of SMB customers, they are going to cause you a world of pain. You need to ruthlessly automate every customer interaction, otherwise you'll end up with thousands of people in customer service. The counter-intuitive point is that smaller customers will often actually generate more customer service volume because they are less sophisticated. They ask loads of questions and don't have their shit together. Enterprise customers are often much more sophisticated.

In an industry built on customer trust they might get some to use their service while they burn cash, but in the long run I don't see them being around. I came across @Atlantic_Money while reading @FundamentalGoob's excellent writeup on $WISE. Right at the top of their website, they claim to be 10x cheaper than Wise, which struck me as odd. How on earth would a small player be able to undercut the most efficient global payments network – which is religious about passing on economies of scale to its customers – by a factor of 10? Logic dictates that it is impossible. Or at least it's impossible to do so profitably. I wonder what their margins are. I also wonder what @kaarmann thinks of this assertion.

Hi! And thanks for taking the time to answer. Allow me to ask a follow-up question: Let's say you transfer US$10,000 to the Euro area. A $3 fee translates into a 0.03% transaction cost. How much money is Atlantic losing on this transaction? I do acknowledge that the costs of currency exchange involve a mix of fixed and variable components and larger transfers do not proportionally lead to higher costs on the exchange provider's side. However, considering $Wise's cost and profitability structure and considering that the average fee charged is 0.67% (materially lower than that of most competitors; of which many subsidize low exchange rates with other product categories), my hunch is that you must be burning significant money on each of these large transactions?

$WISE's reply to this post with a link to its price comparison page is a joke, as @Atlantic_Money points out in its response - Wise intentionally doesn't list Atlantic Money in its price comparison because AM is consistently cheaper. Interesting Reddit threads on this topic.
