Maybe 8-10ish: I'd frequently go deep into woods behind my house. Either so far back I would get a little scared and turn back or I would head down this path that goes to a lake.
Age 10-12: same as you, bike through small town. Typically took a bike path that was several miles away from house
I DONT disagree though with a middle ground with modern tech (like GPS watch just to know where kid is but still allow independence)

My childhood.
Age 10: Walking alone to and from my school (located about 2/3 mile from my house).
Age 11: Biking alone anywhere and everywhere in my town (population 20,000).
Age 14: Taking buses anywhere and everywhere in the major city in which we were living.
Age 17: With my parents' permission, took a trip through remote areas of Pakistan and Iran, where I witnessed civil unrest and a gang rape by soldiers on a train, and got arrested (and quickly released).

Rant #765: By age 14, the MAJORITY of kids are NOT ALLOWED OFF THEIR OWN BLOCK. So found an Institute for Family Studies survey of 25,000 American parents. Meantime, here's part of a checklist of things for the "average" 6-year-old in 1979: 5. Can he stand on one foot with eyes closed for five to ten seconds? 6. Can he ride a small two-wheeled bicycle without helper wheels? 7. Can he tell left hand from right? 8. Can he travel alone in the neighborhood (four to eight blocks) to store, school, playground, or to a friend's home? Has our species suddenly devolved? Why else are 14-year-olds today so much less mobile, trusted, and competent than kids LESS THAN HALF THEIR AGE two generations ago? And do you think that being treated like a kindergartener when you're 14 just MIGHT have some IMPACT on a kid's mood? Does being in prison get people down? And might phones seem like a GIFT FROM GOD because suddenly there's an escape hatch from the tiny, constricted, boring, watched, infantilized life kids are otherwise stuck with? Hmm. Hmm. @GarrettPetersen Much like how the movie was earlier pointing out how out of shape Mr incredible was, she couldn't help but notice how she got a "mom bod" over the years. I think you *should* be able to tell from her nonverbals she's not happy about it, regardless of knowing the time it was made
