It is frustrating to see attacks on @elonmusk when he is undoubtedly a massive supporter and friend of the Jewish people. Outside of his very public support (visiting Israel post October 7th, 2023 and visiting Auschwitz in January of 2024), I was once amazed by a private gesture I observed. As Hanukkah begins this week this story is timely. It was a few years ago so I could be off a year, but I believe it was December 11, 2019, and it was definitely the day of the White House Hanukkah party. By coincidence Elon visited the White House at 3pm for an unrelated meeting. After his meeting concluded he was ready to depart, and I happened to bump into him in the WH lobby. I knew Elon is not Jewish, but decided to invite him to the Hanukkah party (at 7pm). Despite being Elon Musk and busy with all sorts of things, he accepted the invite. The richest man in the world then waited for numerous hours in the lobby just to show support. I actually had work to do myself and left him there, but with amazement would marvel as the hours passed and he was still waiting. As word spread within the building that Elon was waiting for the party, numerous Jewish (and non Jewish) staffers approached him for pictures and to chat. At 5 minutes to 7pm, after having waited for numerous hours, a work emergency called him away. He sought me out, told me what was up, and apologized to me (as if an apology was due) and left. The richest man in the world quietly waited for numerous hours just to show his support for the Jewish people and our holiday.
