Minister: International Relations and Cooperation
Thank you for the telephone conversation this morning. We look forward to receiving information on the alleged extra-judicial killings. To date, there has been no credible information availed. We are a nation of the rule of law, and we will continue to ensure all people within our country feel free and safe. We maintain that while Nigeria has a sovereign right to make a decision with regard to the repatriation of its willing citizens, we remain of the view that calls for repatriations will not be able to address the full scale of irregular migration. We also believe that engagements on migration should be evidence-based, deal with push and pull factors, and avoid fearmongering. The South African government continues to condemn attacks on foreign nationals, and it maintains that law enforcement must decisively deal with any violence against foreign nationals in South Africa. We look forward to ensuring that this matter is handled in a manner that maintains our enduring bilateral relations.
Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu@Ojukwu_Bianca

This morning, I had a phone conversation with Hon Ronald Lamola, South Africa Foreign Affairs Minister who expressed concern and misgivings concerning the plans by the government of Nigeria to evacuate its citizens desirous of leaving the Republic of South Africa due to the recent xenophobic attacks and anti-foreigner sentiments openly expressed during continuing anti-migrant protests in South Africa, the latest of which took place in Durban, South Africa, yesterday 6th May 2026. I maintained that our Government cannot stand by and watch the systematic harrasment and humiliation of our nationals resident in SA as well as the extra-judicial killings of our people, and that the evacuation of our citizens who want to return home remains our Government's priority at this time . I also highlighted the need for their police and justice systems to take the cases on ground of extra-judicial killings of Nigerians in South Africa more seriously and that there should be clear and immediate consequences for such acts. Yesterday's protests in Durban did not record acts of violence as there was heavy security presence. However Nigerians were advised to close their shops and businesses and stay largely indoors by Mission. Our discussions also centered on the violent and indiscriminate rhetoric and actions of South Africa's anti-foreigner political parties which puts the lives and properties of Nigerian and other Nationals at risk, but which conversely might also have the effect jeopardizing the safety of South African interests in Nigeria. Nigerians have exercised, and continue to demonstrate commendable restraint, in their response to the ongoing crisis. I also brought to his attention, having engaged with some of our Nationals resident with their families in South Africa, the unfortunate fact that Nigerian Children as well as children born of both Nigerian and South African parents (referred to as 'Sougerians' ) are being wrongfully bullied in schools and taunted to 'return to their country'. This is reprehensible and capable of causing trauma to young minds for whom such incidents may remain etched in memory. Hon. Lamola informed that the SA authorities recognise that they have a responsibility to protect these innocent children and doing their utmost through education supervisory bodies to discourage these practices. While we both pledged to continue to work together to de-escalate this crisis, noting the vehement condemnations of the President of South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa and SA Government of the prevailing state of affairs, what is worrisome to our citizens both in Nigeria and those resident in South Africa is that the demand that all foreigners leave South Africa, appears to be targeted only towards black Africans which makes one wonder whether what is happening should not be more accurately defined as 'Afriphobia' rather than Xenophobia. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that the Nigerian Missions in South Africa set up , with immediate effect, a crisis notifications unit for imperiled citizens who have also been advised first and foremost to contact SA security authorities whenever dangerous situations arise.

@Am_Blujay Not once does he address the issues being raised by South African citizens. Instead he is asking the President to have South Africa be ran like an authoritarian state like the rest of Africa. We know what Cyril did in Marikana, he must not try us! Lumumba has lost the plot.

📢 OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA In an open reflection, PLO Lumumba questions whether South Africa can champion justice globally while facing internal contradictions at home. He highlights what he calls a moral paradox advocating for international human rights while African migrants within the country remain vulnerable. Addressed to President Cyril Ramaphosa, the message calls for reflection on unity, justice, and African solidarity.

@mrafro96 @GaytonMcK @Merc_05 Not in these numbers, it is not sustainable for South Africa to house millions of Africans illegally nor is it developmental for the African agenda for only 1 country to carry such a burden. It will make the whole of Africa be a failed continent.

People migrate for many reasons: conflict, unemployment, instability, climate pressures, and opportunity. That does not excuse failed leadership anywhere, but it also does not justify xenophobia, or violence. South Africa’s challenges will not be solved by turning vulnerable Africans into scapegoats.

Rebuilding Brotherhood Trust Across African Borders I have been observing with deep concern the alarming rise of xenophobic attacks in South Africa. I strongly condemn these acts. My thoughts are with all those affected—especially our Nigerian brothers and sisters, whose lives, businesses, and dignity are once again under threat. No African should feel unsafe on African soil, or anywhere else. I commend the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mrs Bianca Ojukwu and her Ministry for their swift response to this issue. I recall my visit to our compatriots during a similar crisis. It was a painful experience that revealed both the suffering and resilience of our people. It also highlighted a fundamental truth: beyond borders, we share a common identity and destiny as Africans. Such experiences should have inspired lasting solutions, not recurring tragedy. In this regard, I urge the authorities in South Africa to act decisively - to protect lives and property, bring perpetrators to justice, and restore public confidence. Leadership must rise to the occasion, making it clear that violence and intolerance have no place in our societies. -PO

There is honestly NO good political party for the patriotic South African. Each known party serves a race and/or an LSM group. ANC - Poor Blacks & a Handful of Rich Corrupt Blacks EFF - Radical Poor Blacks & Black Foreigners MK - Radical Poor Blacks, esp. Zulus DA - Rich & Middle Class Whites ActionSA - Middle Class Blacks & Whites Freedom Front - Middle Class Afrikaners IFP - Poor Black Zulus There is NOT ONE party that is FOR South Africans as a whole. Each party wants their constituency of income group & race to thrive.

@Sirprise6 @penuelist_ Look into the tenders of Apartheid and what they did with land in late 80s and 90s when they realised blacks will be in government. Some basically gave themselves state owned land. Not about who is more corrupt it's about making it as if it is a "black only" thing that is racist.

The problem with SA discourse: when a man from kasi says migrants are affecting his dignity and livelihood, the response isn't 'let's engage that seriously.' It's 'you're xenophobic' or 'you're being manipulated.' That's not debate. That's dismissal dressed up as intellect.
