Scientists have discovered a vast, pristine prehistoric landscape hidden nearly two kilometers beneath Antarctica’s ice, a lost world that has remained frozen in time for more than 34 million years.
Using satellite observations and ice-penetrating radar, researchers from Durham University and the British Antarctic Survey mapped an ancient terrain deep beneath the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. The landscape features river-carved valleys, ridges, and elevated plateaus that were likely once covered in forests.
This region, located in Wilkes Land, was sealed off during a major global cooling event millions of years ago, when Antarctica transformed from a temperate, green continent into the frozen wasteland we know today. Since then, it has stayed remarkably well-preserved.
Experts are calling it a “time capsule” that could provide unprecedented insights into Earth’s ancient climate and ecosystems. They now plan to drill through the ice to collect soil and sediment samples, hoping to uncover evidence of the plants and organisms that once thrived there.
