MMORPGs have the greatest potential of any game genre, but that potential is being stifled by a poor understanding of MMO design. That is why this channel analyzes MMO systems, what works, what doesn't and why.

@DorianoMagliano @nuhre_ Counter: If the ONLY reason to interact with another person is being forced to for progression, then it's pointless. Players should WANT to interact with other players.

@nuhre_ If you're not required to interact with a single person in order to make it through the grand majority of the game then being an MMO is absolutely pointless. It's wasted money on server infrastructure for what?

There’s no such thing as a single-player MMO. MMOs are inherently designed around other people. It’s literally in the name. That interaction is what makes you forget you’ve been killing the same mob for an hour, because you’re too busy telling your guildmate they’re a fucking idiot. Take the community away, and you’re just stuck grinding alone with nothing to distract you from how repetitive it actually is.
Gene Park@GenePark

Single player MMO designed games break people’s brains. Honestly this discourse makes me glad Xenoblade Chronicles X didn’t sell well and remains super niche. People still aren’t ready for that game lol

@yoitsOG Blockchain is just hype and f2p has been so badly handled that its a bane on the industry.

I can’t believe while everyone’s moving light years forward with AI… game studios still have to come out & write public apologies for using it gaming is one of the most change resistant industries in the world first with f2p, mobile, blockchain, and now AI. insanely stubborn.
Crimson Desert@CrimsonDesert_

We would like to address questions regarding the use of AI in Crimson Desert. During development, some 2D visual props were created as part of early-stage iteration using experimental AI generative tools. These assets helped us rapidly explore tone and atmosphere in the earlier phases of production. However, our intention has always been for any such assets to be replaced, following final work and review by our art and development teams, with work that aligned with our quality standards and creative direction. Following reports from our community, we have identified that some of these assets were unintentionally included in the final release. This is not in line with our internal standards, and we take full responsibility for it. We also acknowledge that we should have clearly disclosed our use of AI. While these tools were primarily used during early production, with the expectation that these assets would be replaced prior to release, we recognize that this does not excuse the lack of transparency. We sincerely apologize for these oversights. We are currently conducting a comprehensive audit of all in-game assets and are taking steps to replace any affected content. Updated assets will be rolled out in upcoming patches. In parallel, we are reviewing and strengthening our internal processes to ensure greater transparency and consistency in how we communicate with players moving forward.

@Scratch_Point_Z Not everything can translate so some tweaks are necessary. So while a lot of your list is understandable, there is nuance. Also, the reverse is true: Western media doesn't need to be fundamentally altered for an Eastern audience.

Japanese media (generally) gets one shot at being translated into English in any official capacity, thus it should adhere to the original work as faithfully as possible to accurately reflect the creator's intent. All voices are not important, especially those who would see that replaced with goofy memes, jokes, character changes, politics, & dialogue not present in the Japanese version. Localization treats Japanese media as something that needs to be edited for a Western audience or else it won't sell, but this completely ignores the reality that Japanese media became beloved because it offers something unique compared to other media. Changing Japanese media to chase a "wide audience" only serves to repel those who love it for what it is in favor of a potential audience that is only interested in mindless, throw-away consumption. There is no sales risk in providing a faithful translation, this is based on a perpetual myth that Western audiences simply "can't handle" anything outside of their cultural expectations, which is false. And those who do expect it to change on their behalf are not & should never be thought of as the audience; it's not for them. The quality of Japanese media should be able to speak for itself.

@JoshStrifeHayes For instance, in smaller group PvP, if everything is balanced, every player is important and carrying dead weight stands out more. Whereas in larger scale PvP play, newer players can be carried and may have more time to learn mechanics while having less impact on the outcome.

If I have to explain what balanced and fair pvp is to another MMO player I'm going to pvp myself.

@JoshStrifeHayes Balanced, fair PvP is not something the average MMO player wants, and chasing eSports ruined the PvP experience in WoW. Everything in an MMO is about gear, either chasing it or demonstrating its effects, and that includes the PvP. The quest for 'balance' is inherently anti-fun.

@The_Noxxi @JoshStrifeHayes The thing is, that's because only that crowd sees a point in open world pvp. The systems are not designed to encourage consensual, roughly even PVP.

@JoshStrifeHayes Nearly all PvP in an open wold PvP MMOs are practically just higher levels griefing lower levels and griefing in general. It's not about equal fights on relatively equal grounds like in a BG, it's about "haha I'm double the level of this idiot, it can't fight back lmao"

@Jimborgen @JoshStrifeHayes the only uneven pvp is games where there is p2w. if theres no p2w its all even, they just invested more time or are better than you or both

@JoshStrifeHayes I get where he is coming from. Perfectly balanced pvp is boring, but where he's wrong is the unfair advantage part. You don't need an unfair advantage to win, just an advantage. I think this is a matter of confusion.

@The_Lazy_Peon Chin up, the genre has a bright future, even if you can't see it now. It has so much untapped potential. We just need better mmo design literacy.

@Bludborn Not exactly. They expect as much content as games that are years old and polish to some degree, sure but nobody really thinks about systems. They are always undercooked.

Why do most new MMOs fail? Expectations are too high now. Players expect years of content, polish, and systems at launch. That’s almost impossible to deliver. #MMORPG

@DuckWarriorLily What do you mean by type and create like AI? Also, I'd you limit it too much, it becomes useless which isn't good.

I'm pushing for a law that AI has too: - Look like AI - Sound like Ai - type like Ai - create like Ai And give information read out like AI. THIS IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST LAWS OF OUR TIME. The Apparent AI. Ai immitations should look like Ai. Not real. - no ai music - no ai movies. -no ai posters. - no ai google searches. -no ai voices. -no ai actors. -nothing ai without a clear signifier that is AI. AI is destroying our environment. Our games developed. Our movies. Our minds. Big brands and new tech products would not be able to create AI to replace or forge realness. Not legally. This would also effectivily shut down Age verification and digital ID. Collecting data to forge realness is not okay by this law. The benefits of this are: Everything. The cons are: nothing. I would legitimately put time into helping this cause. Please let me know if you support something like this.

@BlackboaStreams The core of the issue is mmo design literacy. It's sorely lacking and always has been but at least, they tried to make fun games in the past, now they make products to drain our banks. But that doesn't mean things can't change for the better.

I've played a few games since New World announced it's sunset. I found I don't have the drive to deep-dive into any other games, even if they're fun. WoW - a fun 'retro' time-waster Quinfall - fun, I can build stuff, a lot of deep systems I have no desire to learn about.

@BlackboaStreams No they aren't. It's ok to think that but please keep it to yourself, we don't need the negativity, especially in the MMORPG space where it is overly abundant. And MMORPGs WILL have a bright future.
