How Ultrasound Images Are Created in Echocardiography 1️⃣ A high-frequency pulse from the transducer (containing piezoelectric crystals) is sent into the body. 2️⃣ Echoes bounce back from tissue interfaces like blood, endocardium or pericardium, pleura and return to the transducer. 3️⃣ These returning signals are interpreted by the machine based on their amplitude (strength) and time of return (depth). Different display modes: ◾A-mode (Amplitude mode): Echoes are displayed as vertical spikes; older and rarely used today. ◾B-mode (Brightness mode): Echo amplitude is shown as varying grayscale dots, this creates real-time, 2D anatomical images. ◾M-mode (Motion mode): A single B-mode line tracked over time, ideal for measuring motion of structures like valves and walls. ◾2D mode: Sweeps multiple scan lines to build a live cross-sectional image of the heart (e.g., LV, IVS, PW). This image beautifully illustrates the foundation of modern echocardiography.
