in 2005, youtube handed anyone with a camera the ability to broadcast to the entire world.
no network deal, no production budget, no gatekeeper deciding what was worth airing.
you know what people did with that freedom?
they uploaded tv clips. late night segments. pirated music videos. things that already existed on tv
the infrastructure for a completely new kind of media was live, and the first thing humanity did with it was recreate the old kind.
it took seven years before pewdiepie crossed a million subscribers.
seven years before the idea of building a career around your specific knowledge of a niche topic felt like a real career path
the tool arrived in 2005 but the behaviour it was built for arrived in 2012.
permissionless prediction markets are sitting in that exact gap right now.
anyone can create a market on anything. the platforms have solved the cold start problem, the liquidity problem, the resolution problem.. the infrastructure is genuinely there.
and the first thing creators are doing with that freedom is building markets on elections, sports outcomes, and crypto prices.
the same categories @kalshi and @polymarket already dominate. not because the platforms are pushing them there. because that’s what people already know will trade.
the long tail of niche, culturally specific markets that permissionless design was always really about is not yet filled
It is not because the tool failed, infact people are just discovering them
it is because the behaviour hasn’t caught up yet.
