**Israel.** This footage (dated April 24, 2026) shows Israeli forces using an excavator to destroy ground-mounted solar panels in Debel, southern Lebanon. The panels supplied electricity to the town and its water station. Similar demolitions of solar arrays, olive trees, roads, and some homes have been reported in the border area as part of Israeli military operations there. Somaliland has really developed the wrong way, politically. It turned from an experimental space for hybrid political order into a caricature of democracy. Inside, in the centre, it is pure clan-chauvinism at work. This could have been avoided if reflexive leaders in Hargeysa would have provided space for open debates about the long-standing internal contradictions in Somaliland. But alas, the narratives (on all sides) hardened and this led, among other factors like external investment monopolised by one clan – Isaaq, to instability and violent conflict. Many external observers chose to ignore these complications for too long, since Somaliland being a "beacon of stability and democracy" was just too nice of a story to tell (and emotionally support). Besides, leaders in Hargeysa professionalised selling a "victimhood-narrative" ("We were bombarded...", "genocide happened..."), ignoring the much more complex historical facts in the 1980s. And again, most external analysts in one way or the other bought into it. This means: analyses often depicted a distorted picture.

Not to play the devil’s advocate, but this reads more like a personal opinion presented as analysis. Your claim that external military support without perfect political conditions is inherently risky is overstated, and could apply to any partner in Somalia. Prof. You and I know that if Somalia waited for the “political moment” much of the progress achieved to date would not have been possible.

Türkiye – Somalia:  A semi colonial relationship! Five years ago, I wrote an opinion piece about the evolving relationship between Somalia and Türkiye. The essay pointed out the imbalance in the relationship and warned that the structure of the relationship did not bode well for Somalia and Somalis. Tragically, developments since then have vindicated the prognosis the essay made.
