@CathyYoung63 I think either the Democrats fight back in perfectly legal ways such as court packing - or they concede that the US is now ruled by a Republican Supreme Court, which will act to insure it remains a Republican ruled court. Your suggestion in effect would be Dems surrendering.

I'm strongly against court packing b/c I don't think we're at a point where institutions are meaningless. BUT let's not ignore the role GOP strategy to deny Obama a last-year appointment on a principle blatantly violated w/RBG replacement has played in the current cynical mood

This is a hard article to read, but I hope you'll do so. I've spent some time reporting on widespread rape and other sexual violence of Palestinian male and female prisoners by Israeli authorities, and the article is now published. The assault victims were warned not to give speak of what they endured -- they were sometimes told they would be killed or raped if they gave interviews -- but they found the courage to do so. One man described being raped three times in a single day in Israeli prison, the third time after he tried to protest. A young woman said the guards would come in at the beginning of each shift and strip her naked and abuse her. Another reported that she was shown photos of herself being raped and warned they would be released unless she cooperated with Israeli intelligence. Even three children who had been detained told me they had been sexually abused. Look, whatever our position on the Middle East, we should be able to agree on being anti-rape. Sexual assaults were horrific when Israeli women were targeted on Oct. 7, and they're equally horrific when Israeli authorities use them against Palestinians day after day after day. The Riverside sequence is worth reading carefully. The citizen group alleged 45,000 inflated votes. The county's chief election official responded with a 40-minute documented public presentation showing exactly where the group's calculations went wrong - they used raw poll worker estimates and approximated intake forms not required by law. The actual variance rate fell within normal California ranges, well below the 2% mandatory recount threshold. Sheriff Bianco, who is also a Republican candidate for governor of California, seized 650,000 ballots the following month. The official refutation was public, documented, and presented before the action was taken. It was ignored. That's what the Brennan Center is identifying as the new playbook: unfounded claims don't need to survive scrutiny to become the basis for official law enforcement action. The scrutiny gets acknowledged and bypassed. The action follows. The seized ballots and opened investigations then become the next round of evidence that something must have been wrong.

Netanyahu said that an Iranian nuclear strike on Israel would be like “10,000 tons of TNT falling on a country the size of New Jersey (22,610 km2).” Israel has dropped 200,000 tonnes of explosives on Gaza (365 km2) - the equivalent of 20 nukes on 1.6% the size of New Jersey.

This is correct, and in this particular case it is also true that the population of the Gaza Strip has declined since October 2023. Claims the Gaza population has increased are based on CIA projections that were made several months before the Gaza Genocide began. Many of the Israel flunkies using these projections are perfectly aware they were rendered irrelevant shortly after they were calculated.

@CathyYoung63 @myndmaven "A non-binary person is someone whose gender identity is not exclusively male or female. They may identify as somewhere between, outside of, or fluctuating." With work, you could find that "incredibly offensive," but usually you're against people straining to be offended.

@myndmaven "Deeper"? What's deeper is that I've never seen any definition of "nonbinary" that doesn't propagate incredibly offensive stereotypes of men and women.

All this. Plenty of people (men & women) have been extremely "gender non-conforming" with no made-up pronouns and w/o claiming that they're neither men nor women E.g. French artist Louise Abbéma, shown here in 1914

We truly don’t have to mystify this. Israeli ambassador to the US at the time Michael Herzog told Israeli media in April 2025 “We fought [in Gaza] for over a year, and the admin never came to us and said, ‘ceasefire now.’ It never did. And that’s not to be taken for granted.”

This week Doctors Without Borders shared analysis on the impact of Israel’s DELIBERATE blocking of aid to Gaza. I can’t find a single headline in Western media. How is further proof of genocide—that is still ongoing—not newsworthy?

There is a genre of writing that goes something like this: “Look! A Palestinian in Gaza is doing something other than dying. Proof it’s not a genocide.” If you think punching down at genocide survivors makes you look good, you are psychopathic genocidal excuse of a homosapien.

Partisan gerrymandering should be unconstitutional in every state. It's pure Soviet politics, allowing the people in power to rig the system to ensure they stay in power. What's particularly disgusting is what is happening in Florida, where voters overwhelmingly voted to make partisan gerrymandering unconstitutional, and then Ron DeSantis and Florida Republicans decided to explicitly ignore the will of voters and pass an unconstitutional bill, counting on the GOP-packed state Supreme Court to bail them out. It's vile behavior.

I'm often asked if I identify as a Zionist or an anti-Zionist. The truth is, I don’t identify as either. I don’t believe, as a matter of principle, that Israel should be dismantled. I don’t believe, as a matter of principle, that Israel needs to exist. I believe, as a matter of principle, that Israel does not have the right to oppress another people. And that between the river and the sea, the rights of all people must be protected. If Israel can transform itself to fit this equation, it should continue to exist. If it can’t, then it shouldn’t.

Airstrikes, tank shells, and artillery create blast waves, shrapnel, and collapsing buildings. Of course they cause amputations. The question isn’t whether Hamas IEDs can cause amputations. It’s whether they plausibly explain Gaza’s mass civilian amputations. Given the sheer scale of Israeli airstrikes, artillery, tank shells, and other high-powered explosives used across dense civilian areas, compared to the far more limited use of IEDs, the answer is an obvious no. The reason Gaza has the highest number of child amputees per capita in the world is Israel's overwhelming use of explosives in dense urban areas. This is not even a matter of debate.

@AdarWeinreb Another major factor is that Israel has destroyed medical infrastructure. Hospitals have been bombed, essential supplies are unavailable. According to doctors who have worked in Gaza, they're forced to amputate limbs that could be saved if the infrastructure was present.
