Excited to announce the 3rd edition of The Oxford Handbook of Cardiology is here. A huge effort from all editors, contributors and reviewers, updating over a decade's worth of advances in cardiology. Thank you to the OUP team for all your help getting this across the line! @OUPMedicine

Past your peak? Choose a new sport. At 18, I could run 100m in 11 seconds. Ten years later I raced my younger brother and immediately got injured (and lost the race). Today I would pull a hamstring just thinking about it. But long distance? Different story. I’m 38 and can run a 38-minute 10k. I’m basically the same speed I was a decade ago, and I plan to be faster by the time I’m 48. And that’s totally possible. There are 70-year-olds running sub-3-hour marathons. Sprinting is a young person’s game. Long-distance is a slow-burn that you can do for your whole life.

Heated debates I’ve had recently with my 4-year-old son: - Do dinosaurs have thumbs? - Who would win in a fight between 2 lions and 10 wolves? - Who’s stronger: He-Man or Hercules? - Which continent is bigger: Asia or Africa? He flat out refused to believe me that Asia was bigger than Africa, based on the argument that African elephants are bigger than Asian elephants.

My mom grew up in a time when sending girls to school wasn’t the norm - she begged her family to let her study - became the first woman in her family to finish school - fought off an early marriage so she could go to college - taught herself english by borrowing books and visiting libraries - earned a degree in english even though all her schooling was in hindi - chose to marry my father because he had a doctorate and would support her education - raised two kids and then went back to university - got a doctorate degree all while raising us - spent her life championing women’s education Every once in a while, i remind myself where i come from- how much privilege i stand on, and how much work there is left to do to make the world more just and equitable.

So proud of @louisecollier30 presenting her experience of setting up the heart failure specialist nurse in-reach service at @BucksHealthcare at the Oxford Heart Failure Specialist Day. This has had such an impact on patient care- proactive identification of patients, double the number of patients receiving specialist reviews, a huge uptick in the number of patients on guideline directed medical therapy and a 30% reduction in re-hospitalisation 👏👏👏👏 @JennyRicketts2. Special thanks to @Novartis and @MayooranShan for their involvement too!
