@LongshotIbrahim I prefer medieval warfare because the choreography is more interesting to watch compared to people shooting each other.

@BattlestationX I've always liked "medieval type" best, but there are some excellent "futuristic" types too. SOME of StarWars was excellent (some quite the opposite). I don't see why it can't apply to modern stuff too but I confess I can't recall a REALLY fun adventure book w a modern setting

I think mystery and suspense but my favourite type of fiction by far is adventure, usually with a bit of war or battles thrown in. Ideally it should be a reasonably fast-paced tale in tone, but with insights into the characters & their change over the story.

@LongshotIbrahim I think a lot of westerners confuse political authoritarianism which obviously is draconian against both genders with discrimination against women.

Women's education in Iran is impressive and highly prioritized, which is one reason specifically feminist critiques always fall flat. Actually Iran's oft-rival Saudia is pretty decent in this regard too, Saudi women do get good education (both before and since the driving thing)

Americans have a tendency to believe only they have the right to rebel against an imperial power, everyone else should do non-violent resistance unless they are a state.
Ro Khanna@RoKhanna

@toddrichman @slowhoneybee @Israel @jeremyscahill @DropSiteNews @ryangrim Any fair person watching would see I disagreed with Scahill again and again and called Hamas a terrorist organization and said I did not believe that violence against Israeli soldiers or civilians is justified. I am for non-violence and a just peace.

@shadihamid The exception is reddit leftists who tend to be both very left-leaning on economics and culture.

The funny thing about the "moderates" vs. "the left" discourse is that it's often left-wing populists who are more culturally moderate, precisely because they never bought into Democrats' woke obsession and because they prioritize class divides over things like gender or race.

I read your analysis. To add on, I think some of BAK's criticisms were sensationalist and hypocritical. Al Sharaa is not equivalent to Assad and some of the groups he supported/didn't criticize as strongly are more authoritarian than Al Sharaa.

My article on the imprisonment of Ahmad Sharaa's supporter-turned-critic Bilal Abdul-Kareem and the issues around it, including an unhealthy precedent and several bouts of double standards. Feedback/criticism welcome. muslimmatters.org/2026/07/13/an-…

@LongshotIbrahim I remember Tom Faccine arguing that it is a myth that the medieval Christian crusaders did not have secular aspirations and were only motivated by religion. A convenient myth that the enlightenment thinkers had.

This presumes that (1) medieval Christians had no motivation beyond religion and (2) modern secularist "Westerners" have no religious motivation, neither true. The fundamental point is both conceiving of themselves as fighting a (usually Muslim) civilizational Other.
YZD@finestlibyan

@RashmanTheHorse The secular West is the successor to Christendom but it is distinct, and calling anything it does a crusade is anachronistic at best.

The fact that the Democratic Party could force Biden to resign based on dementia as well as Graham Platner to resign due to rape allegations means the Democratic Party could have done the same for other reasons like opposing genocide. They simply chose not to.

@LongshotIbrahim A lot of people argue that the NDP is similar to the DSA. But they are quite different, at least historically and their support bases are not the same. The main differences I see is that DSA types tend to be much more hostile towards religion than NDP circles.

Leftists vary hugely. It is hugely either the hammer-and-sickle Lenin nostalgists or conversely the hairsbreadth away from being a neocon types who attack Muslims. Most others try to stay in their line

AOC's refusal to wholeheartedly endorse Graham Platner -- after endorsing Biden and Harris at the height of a genocide -- is inexcusable. It defies justification. And people's inability to be frank about this will be what separates her reasonable supporters from the fanatics.
Eric Michael Garcia@EricMGarcia

AOC on Graham Platner becoming the Democratic nominee in Maine: "I, of course, am deeply supportive of a Democratic majority, and we're going to do what we can to secure that, and the people of Maine have made their decision, and we'll move forward." #MESen

@LongshotIbrahim The biggest problem is Assad supposedly in the war against Israel. The second biggest problem is Ahmed al-Sharaa being allied with Sisi who was pro Assad. And Sisi probably belongs in the second list if MBS is.

Isn’t Afghanistan international banned in Afghanistan? Why give them any attention?

The Western "Pro-Palestine" movement has failed the people of Gaza. The movement is principally concerned with purity spiralling based on weird ideologies that no human beings believed before the 21st century and have little to no resonance in Gaza.

The words "Gaza" and "genocide" appear precisely zero times in the DNC autopsy. Turning a blind eye to crimes against humanity was a grave injustice, and a terrible election strategy.
