Since this has escaped my normal audience there’s a few things I want to clarify: 1. I am actually American. 2. It should go without saying that I condemn in the clearest possible terms politically motivated acts of violence. 3. I am a firm supporter of free speech and the right to argue political beliefs in a public forum without fear of violent retribution. 4. Campus debate culture is not representative of constructive political discourse and the proliferation of outrage-based model of clip farming has driven more division than serious engagement with opposing political ideas. 5. The events in question resemble a protest or a rally far more than any kind of serious grappling with ideas and are often advertised as such by organizers to draw attention and court controversy. 6. While Charlie Kirk was a prominent figure in this space, he was neither the worst offender nor even particularly responsible for the degradation of civility in college politics. 7. All this is to say, a lot of people read the term debate and jump to conclusions about good arguments and open discourse, but if you’re familiar with these events you know it’s a fairly hollow display of what politics is and how we ought to engage across ideologies. I don’t think this is controversial, but I do want to note that this fairly moderate criticism of the incentives of our political culture has been met with some of the most despicable comments I have ever received.
