Since 1978, China has planted more than 66 billion trees in an effort to slow the expansion of two major deserts, making it the country with the largest tree-planting effort in history. China has carried out the world’s largest afforestation program, planting tens of billions of trees to combat desertification and restore damaged ecosystems. After decades of deforestation, overgrazing, and expanding deserts, China launched the Three North Shelterbelt Program in 1978 to slow the growth of the Gobi Desert and protect farmland and cities from dust storms. The effort later expanded to areas surrounding the Taklamakan Desert, where trees were planted along highways, rivers, and desert borders to stabilize shifting sands. These programs helped increase China’s forest coverage from around 12% in the early 1980s to more than 24% today, with NASA satellite data showing China contributed about 25% of the world’s increase in leaf area between 2000 and 2017.

The U.S. Department of Energy instructed AI data centers to stop using electricity from the main power grid. As temperatures exceeded 100 degrees Fahrenheit across much of the eastern United States Energy Secretary Chris Wright ordered data centers and other major electricity consumers on the PJM grid to switch to backup generators. The purpose was to conserve power so that homes could continue running air conditioners during one of the hottest periods of the year. The PJM grid serves 13 states and includes northern Virginia which hosts the largest cluster of data centers in the world. These centers support AI systems cloud computing streaming services and much of the internet but they require massive amounts of electricity. Officials explained that backup generators would ease strain on the grid and help avoid blackouts while millions of air conditioners operated at peak levels. This action illustrates how the rapid growth of AI infrastructure is starting to compete with regular household electricity needs during extreme heat waves. There are drawbacks to the solution. Most backup generators burn diesel or natural gas which creates more local air pollution than power from large plants. The region also has limited battery storage compared to states like California and Texas making it challenging to handle demand surges with cleaner sources. As AI data centers expand across the country experts predict that extreme heat events will increasingly challenge the ability of the power grid to meet both technological and everyday needs.

When the Vietnam War ended in 1975, the countryside was scattered with the remains of military equipment left behind by years of intense air operations. Among the most common items were external fuel tanks, also known as drop tanks, which had been attached beneath U.S. fighter aircraft such as the F-4 Phantom and F-105 Thunderchief. These large aluminum tanks were designed to carry extra fuel during long missions and were normally discarded once empty to lighten the aircraft. Thousands of them ended up lying across fields and rural areas throughout Vietnam. For local farmers and craftsmen, the unusual shape of these tanks quickly suggested a practical use. The smooth aluminum shells were lightweight, strong, and already shaped somewhat like a boat hull. With a few modifications such as cutting an opening along the top, adding simple wooden seats, and fitting small paddles, the tanks could easily be turned into narrow river boats or canoes. In many river communities where transportation depended heavily on waterways, these improvised boats became surprisingly useful. Over time, the converted drop tank boats became a familiar sight along Vietnamese rivers and canals. What had once been part of military aircraft flying combat missions was transformed into everyday transportation for fishing, farming, and travel between villages. The story became a striking example of how communities repurposed the remnants of war into something practical, turning discarded pieces of aviation technology into simple boats that helped support daily life. #archaeohistories

In the summer of 1964, a graduate student named Donald R. Currey unknowingly made one of the most infamous mistakes in the history of science. While conducting fieldwork beneath Wheeler Peak in what is now Great Basin National Park, Currey cut down a gnarled bristlecone pine known locally as Prometheus. At the time, it appeared to be just another ancient tree in a harsh alpine landscape. No one yet realized what it truly was. Bristlecone pines are uniquely suited to extreme environments. They grow slowly, their dense wood resisting insects, rot, and time itself. Currey believed their growth rings could help date nearby glacial features, since each ring preserves a record of past climate. After standard coring tools failed to penetrate Prometheus, permission was granted to fell the tree and take a full cross section. Only later, counting the rings in a lab, did the scale of the decision become clear. The count climbed past 4,000 years, then 4,500, then far beyond anything previously recorded. Prometheus was roughly 4,900 years old, making it the oldest tree ever dated at the time. By the moment that fact was known, it was already gone. Today, only a weathered stump marks where it once stood, while a slab of its wood rests in a visitor center, quietly displaying nearly five millennia of uninterrupted time. #archaeohistories
